What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Engineering Group as a Division Safety Officer. The Engineering Division Safety Officer will provide direct support to staff to assure that work activities are consistent with Jefferson Lab's environmental, health, and safety program. Identify trends using data analytics tools and concerns noted during inspections to resolve safety concerns and advise division leadership on proactive safety practices to prevent incidents. Lead to ensure accidents and incidents are promptly investigated, documented, and lessons learned captured. Guide the use of a commercial work planning tool, ePAS, throughout the division working with divisional staff and ES&H support personnel to resolve issues, refine existing processes to accurately support field operations, and provide input for modification of associated work processes as needed.

In this role, you will:



  • Perform safety walk-downs/audits of work-spaces owned or frequented by Engineering staff independently, with ES&H staff and divisional safety wardens. Assist in the identification of corrective actions and ensure that corrective actions are addressed in a timely manner. Ensure lessons learned information is communicated to the division in a timely manner and is actively incorporated into future work planning.
  • Assist in the safety aspects of planning and coordinating division/department work, including reviewing work planning documents, drawings and inspecting job locations.
  • Serve as the primary interface point for the utilization throughout the Engineering Division of the work planning and control tool, ePAS. Work with divisional staff to suggest improvements, develop processes that reflect work practices and suggest modifications to the overall process to enhance safety throughout the lab.
  • Ensure that lab work planning and control policies/procedures and HPI principles are incorporated into all facets of the Division's work through effective written and verbal communications to all levels of staff.
  • Develop safety metrics in collaboration with the ES&H Division to measure Engineering Division performance with respect to ES&H targets and objectives, including reporting, tracking, and trending safety issues as they pertain to Engineering Division activities.
  • Secure and coordinate additional specific ES&H subject matter support from the ES&H Division or others as needed. Keep ES&H Division personnel informed of Engineering activities, progress, and deliverables.
  • Conduct incident/near-miss investigations in accordance with Jefferson Lab procedures.
  • Guide and track the use of the lab's Management Safety Discussion program for the division, including performing field observations. Train observers as needed to deploy the program and utilize the application.


Qualifications We Require



  • Bachelor's Degree inOccupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related field
  • 4 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Able to effectively train his/her work group and effectively lead work teams within the work group.
  • Able to give effective presentations to general audiences and write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for lab consumption.
  • General working knowledge of industrial hazards and typical mitigation measures, general manufacturing methods and industrial operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact, facilitate, and integrate a wide range of personnel, including scientific staff, project management staff, engineers, technicians, and oversight personnel.
  • Ability to perform causal analysis to determine root cause and develop corrective actions.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers including Internet, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
