Job Description

Manages complex hourly energy transactions across trading hubs in the Western Interconnection and mentors Real-Time Operations staff. Responsible for meeting power demands of retail customers in a 24/7 operation. Optimizes surplus generation capacity, and manages sub-hourly markets by submitting bids, schedules, and transfer tags to the Market Operator. Develops and implements risk management strategies to minimize power costs and maximize asset utilization.

Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE's operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

Job Responsibilities

  • Proficiently markets and trades surplus/deficit of wholesale energy, transmission, and capacity products.
  • Optimizes scheduling and tagging of transmission, energy, and reserves.
  • Interprets and optimizes the economic dispatch plan. Makes significant adjustments when necessary.
  • Effectively manages planned or unplanned generation and transmission outages to the benefit of the organization.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert and is intimately familiar with all details surrounding assets and contracts in the portfolio.
  • Develops, recommends, and oversees the execution of strategies to acquire sufficient and cost-effective short-term supplies of wholesale energy commodities to reliably serve load.
  • Mentors and assists in the development of Real-Time Operations staff.
  • Develops and optimizes tactics to flow power throughout WECC markets.
  • Creates tactics to capture real-time arbitrage opportunities and manage day-ahead and real-time transactions.
  • Develops tactics for generation and transmission schedules into ISO's, control areas, and transmission providers that lower wholesale power costs and improve reliability.
  • Operates on rotating shift assignments to cover 24/7 demand for electricity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with a technical or commercial focus from an accredited 4-year college or university, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Four (4) years of experience in energy trading/scheduling, marketing, or bulk power and gas system management.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in power trading. Experience with physical/financial power trading dynamics to include power generation characteristics of hydro, coal, wind and gas fired generation.
  • Knowledge of the WECC transmission system and experience trading at different points throughout all of WECC.
  • Knowledge of Western Systems Power Pool (WSPP) agreement.
  • Experience managing physical assets within the WECC.
  • Ability to model and develop strategies based on intra-day and next-day pricing and load.
  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, commodity management, and electricity and natural gas trading and hedging practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact at all levels of the corporation.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and resolve problems, without direct supervision, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating shift schedule.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced spreadsheet and database computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively present analyses in a public forum.

The pay range for this position is$50.24-$83.70 per hour, and this position is eligible for annual goals based incentive bonuses.
