LOCATION: Either Columbus, WI or Chili, NY

SUMMARY: A Technical Position reporting to the Senior Manager of Innovation & Sustainability. Primary Responsibility is to investigate, develop, and validate sustainable packaging material technologies that close the gap between marketed material offerings and customer's exacting application requirements in the sustainable flexible packaging space. This individual will work independently and as a part of the broader team to identify, plan, and execute against required deliverables and milestones. To be successful in this position, the candidate is expected to have experience in flexible packaging materials development, measurement, and characterization, be a proactive problem solver, have a proven ability to generate and develop innovative approaches to solve problems, ability to work with multidisciplinary teams both internally and externally, as well as excellent presentation and communication skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Conduct focused research in targeted sustainable focus areas with goal of delivering products that meet and exceed customer expectations for form, function, performance, and optimal manufacturability.
  • Establish and execute project plans for identified projects including clarifying project deliverables, baselining current offerings, targeted gaps, plans for characterization and testing, and timelines as well as providing regular updates to the broader team.
  • Leverage internal knowledge and seek to grow and collaborate with the supplier network for existing and developmental technologies and innovations needed to deliver targeted solutions.
  • Work to optimize, build, and refine the resources and knowledge base of materials and technologies that aide our technical development teams in making the best choices for sustainable product development opportunities.
  • Support internal and external business sustainable packaging opportunities with customized proposals and presentations articulating the values of sustainable packaging.
  • Participate in selected sustainable trial activities, both internally and externally, and document outcomes and learnings to optimize choices for new opportunities as well as focus on productivity enhancement and waste reduction.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and other relevant supply chain partners to understand both current and future product / equipment pipelines and where they can be leveraged.
  • Participate in sustainable packaging associations and working groups as assigned, with goal of educating the broader team, identifying future packaging changes that may affect our business, and enhancing standards development activities.
  • Support promotion and marketing of APC innovations and activities.
  • Develop a keen awareness of the sustainable packaging market space, competitive packaging innovations, and work to identify market and product gaps.
  • Participate in training, embrace concepts of and actively practice the STOP Safety Program fundamentals to aid APC's efforts to achieve a zero-accident rate.
  • Attend and participate in all company mandated meetings.
  • Business travel as required.
  • Other Duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in a Technical Field (Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, etc.) from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate for this position will have a broad knowledge of packaging, materials, equipment in the flexible packaging space, awareness of the sustainable space including standards and guidelines, and passion for educating, promoting, and growing sustainable packaging within APC and our customer base.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information predominantly technical in nature and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Skillful in presentation skills both in preparation and delivery is preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
