Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
The employee will carry out research on the Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms involved in mitigating Enteric (intestinal) Bacterial pathogen colonization in food animals, particularly poultry species. The employee will support projects through original research, collaboration with other team member, and mentoring of students. The employee will also contribute to additional proposal efforts, thereby strengthening North Carolina A&T State University's ability to attract external funding. The employee's principal research responsibilities will be to utilize gene expression, electrophoresis/blotting, and cell culture techniques to investigate mechanisms involved in immune responses to enteric bacterial pathogens in food animals, particularly poultry species. The employee will confer with Professor/Dr.Fasina on overall research direction and strategy but will exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment and original thinking in carrying out research that contributes to original knowledge and advances the University's reputation in research. The employee will publish research results, in collaboration with Professor/Dr. Fasina, in recognized journals. The employee will share student mentoring with Professor/Dr. Fasina and will participate in departmental seminars and other professional activities as assigned. |

CAES produces the largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Sciences.
CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations, including an animal science specialization track
The Department of Animal Sciences is housed in a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility. It accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit. Bachelor of Science Degrees are offered in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science, in addition to The Master of Science Degree in Agricultural and Environmental Systems with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems. The department is supported by beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, equine teaching and research facilities. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University's fam complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural activities. The department consists of 12 faculty members; 410 undergraduate students and 12 graduate students. The Department of Animal Sciences produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department also has one of the highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success. |
Minimum Requirements |
Ph.D. awarded within the last five years in Animal Sciences or related fields such as Bacteriology, Biosciences, Immunology, and Molecular Biology. |
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
A strong experimental and/or theoretical background with evidence of technical skills related to
investigating immune responses to enteric bacterial pathogens in poultry species, or other monogastric food animals.
Strong experience in statistical analysis of scientific research data using
SAS software or
SPSS.
Considerable experience in publishing research manuscripts in scientific journals. |
