The Tennessee Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle titling and registration laws. The Department collects approximately 87% of state revenue, enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially to encourage voluntary tax compliance, and apportions collections to the various state funds and local units of government.

Job Overview:

Under general supervision, is responsible for learning to perform paraprofessional tax auditing assistance work. An intern in this class learns to provide assistance and information to tax auditors in the examination of business records to ensure compliance with accounting and auditing principles and with state tax laws, rules and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assists tax auditors or agents in auditing, analyzing, or investigating the financial records of businesses and individuals.
  • Utilizes various resources and tools to research and compile taxpayer history for tax audits or investigations.
  • Compiles and maintains taxpayer data.
  • Conducts research and may assist in the computation of certain tax assessments.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and three semester hours in accounting course work.
  • Academic Year Preference is second and up, although third and fourth year are preferred.
