The Department of Translational Safety is responsible for the nonclinical safety assessment of all drug candidates in the portfolio of Genentech from the discovery phase up to support o marketed products. Translational Safety provides scientific leadership and plays an active cross-functional role in the drug development process. Within Translational Safety, Computational Toxicology is part of Predictive Toxicology and is a key component in providing analytics and informatics based support to the development of small molecule and biotherapeutics portfolio from clinical candidate selection up to post-marketing. Computational Toxicology is responsible for driving the development and uptake of computational approaches within the gRED organization. The team performs activities such as development of computational tools and models, as well as construction of databases, curation and analysis of various types of in vitro and in vivo data.

This role works in close collaboration with other functions within the department as well as in cross-functional collaborations with computational experts in related disciplines such as computational chemistry, computational DMPK or gRED computational sciences.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Researching, developing, and implementing novel computational analysis methods and models, in the context of department and project goals to support data-driven decision making for molecule progression in collaboration with toxicologists, and support and advance key scientific and technological questions.

  • Evaluating emerging computational technologies for their applicability to safety predictions, providing recommendations for improving processes related to toxicological studies, and managing technology solutions.

  • Supporting other functions within Translational Safety in providing scientific insight and leadership in computationally related areas, interfacing toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, as needed.

Who You Are:

  • PhD degree in (Computational) Toxicology, Chemistry, Biological Sciences or related field as well as demonstrated experience in informatics/machine learning or equivalent training

  • 0-3 years of experience (Senior Scientist) and 3+ years of experience (Principal Scientist) in the pharmaceutical industry or other relevant organization and understanding of drug discovery & development

  • Familiarity with safety relevant data from both in vitro and in vivo sources and understanding their translational relevance as well as expertise in retrieval, curation and analysis of such data

  • Hands-on experience in relevant scripting/programming languages such as Python or R and preferably experience with cheminformatics-specific packages (e.g. RDKit, OEChem)

  • Strong academic performance and publication record required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

  • Strong ability to build productive cross-functional collaborations both within and external to Genentech

  • Genuine interest in translating basic research insights into impactful therapeutics

  • Experience in QST, systems toxicology is a plus

  • Experience in LLMs/Generative AI and their application in toxicology is a plus

Relocation benefits are available for this posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $101,500-$232,900 (Senior Scientist) and $148,200-$275,200 (Principal Scientist) . Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
