We currently have an opening for a Research Technician I in the lab of Dr. Cagla Eroglu at Duke University. The Eroglu Lab investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie synaptic connectivity in the CNS. They aim to understand how astrocyte-neuron communication shapes neuronal circuitry in the normal mammalian brain and how problems in astrocyte-neuron communication contribute to the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. What You'll Do: Perform a variety of technical duties to investigate astrocyte and synapse cell biology in the developing and aging mouse and rat brain, including tissue culture, immunocytochemistry, viral-based techniques, microscopy, imaging, image analysis, and PCR. Support the maintenance of mouse and rat colonies including setting up breeding, weaning and genotyping. Generate and maintain primary rat and mouse neuron and astrocyte cultures, including isolation, plating, feeding, and sterile reagent preparation. Tissue processing for histology, and quantitation of various markers. Collect, record, organize and verify data accuracy; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs, and reports. The candidate is expected to document procedures and collect data in an organized and complete fashion following the laboratory SOP. Participate in laboratory meetings, workshops, retreats, and planning sessions. Review literature as needed to build essential knowledge of the lab's scientific area of focus. Maintain lab operations by performing laboratory maintenance duties such as assisting with maintaining reagent and equipment inventories. Support the other technicians as a team under the direction of the lab manager. What You Bring: A bachelor's degree in biology, neurobiology, or related fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A passion for science, and for the work of the lab. Comfortable with working with rodents. Experience with live mouse handling is a strong plus, but not required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail. Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries. Strong enthusiasm to learn new techniques and expand your scientific knowledge. Experience with molecular biology techniques and wet lab bench work is preferred. Physical Requirements Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials. Compensation Range $16.73 (minimum) - $20.94 (midpoint) - $27.21 (maximum) Pay Type: Hourly HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers.
