The Lab Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of preparation, cleaning, and clerical duties in the laboratory to support clinical services.
*Clean and disinfect surgical grossing and frozen section room, wash room, and accessioning area daily and upon request, including all work areas, instruments and supplies.
*Remove and dispose of formalin-fixed specimens and waste tissue from specimen containers. Refill and label specimen containers with formalin as required, maintaining a constant available supply.
*Keep quality control logs up to date through documentation of temperatures, eyewash testing, etc.
*Receive and/or collect specimens from the operating room and designated areas in the laboratory periodically throughout the day. Ensure specimen integrity is maintained from the time of acquisition to the time of gross dissection by the Pathologist.
*Perform registration of outpatient specimens following established protocol.
*Enter specimens into the computer following established protocol. Note any deficiencies in patient specimen information. Label cassettes for tissue specimens.
*File and maintain microscopic slides and paraffin blocks. Assist with the disposal of microscopic slides and paraffin blocks as needed.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Experience
One (1) to three (3) years laboratory aide experience preferred
