DPWES provides award-winning solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and landfill, regulates solid waste services, and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County. DPWES Solid Waste is a diverse work force of approximately 300 merit and 50 non-merit employees and has an annual operating budget of more than $100M. Our nationally recognized team of professionals are working together towards a singular goal: providing environmentally responsible and cost-effective management of municipal solid waste, keeping Fairfax County safe, green, healthy, and clean.

What you'll do:
  • Provide high-level administrative support to the SWMP Executive Team, including Outlook calendar management, correspondence, and meeting coordination.
  • Supervise and lead administrative staff supporting the SWMP finance unit and front desk operations.
  • Assist with procurement activities, including p-card reconciliation, vendor coordination, and policy compliance.
  • Serve as the agency's Training and Awards Coordinator, tracking nominations and facilitating employee recognition programs.
  • Oversee administrative policy development and digital records management, ensuring compliance with retention requirements.
  • Support payroll, office supply ordering, and contract tracking.
Who We're Looking For:
A team-oriented professional with:
  • Proven experience supporting executives and managing administrative operations.
  • Supervisory skills with a focus on mentorship, goal setting, and performance management.
  • Familiarity with procurement processes and financial documentation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and other business systems.

Note: The assigned functional areas of this position are office management, procurement, finance, and accounts payable. Telework is not available for this role.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and four years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in public sector administration or finance.
  • Knowledge of County procurement policies.
  • Five (5) years of experience with digital records retention and program reporting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance. Ability to negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Ability to perform repetitive movements of the arm, wrist and shoulder. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and work in positions for lengthy periods of time. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Able to operate light vehicles. Manual dexterity needed to handle materials. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
