Position description

Two full-time postdoctoral scholars are needed at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The responsibilities position will be split between two projects: one project to develop a standardized test for identification of DLD in English language learners who speak Vietnamese or Spanish as a home language (Test of English Language Learning (TELL)), and one to develop a progress monitoring test to inform literacy instruction of Spanish-English bilinguals (A2i-epanol). The postdoctoral scholar will be affiliated with UCI's School of Education. This is a 1-year position (with possibility of renewal) with a proposed start date of May 15, 2025 (negotiable).

The postdoctoral scholar will lead the implementation of the data management, training research assistants in data cleaning protocols, data analysis, and data archiving plans for each of the projects. They will take the lead in writing user manuals for the two projects and participate in writing up manuscripts for publication. In addition, he or she will join a project team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates conducting a range of qualitative and quantitative studies that examine patterns of performance of children with and without DLD or risk for reading difficulties at different stages of exposure to English and the home language. Activities will include assisting with designing and implementing research projects, collaborating and communicating with the collaborating project co-investigators, seeking human subjects research approval, analyzing data, writing up results for publications and presentations, and documenting information on the project(s).

Requirements:

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field by the start date of the position; prior expertise in leading research projects; expertise in research design and methodology including psychometrics; outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English; a successful record of publication and presentations; and the ability to work well with diverse teams. Candidates should have knowledge of bilingualism, expertise in DLD and its diagnostic markers within linguistic variation. Desirable qualifications include certification as a speech-language pathologist and knowledge of one of the target languages (Vietnamese and/or Spanish).
