Overview
UnityPoint-St Luke's Hospital Full-Time 40 hours/week Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, manages scheduling of and preparation of chemotherapy, TPN's, IV additive solutions, and irrigating solutions using aseptic technique in the laminar air flow hoods. Assists the pharmacist with ordering supplies and pharmaceuticals, unpacks and stores drug supplies, manages recalls and DSCSA Regulations, rotates inventory, checks outdates, refills Automated Dispensing Cabinets, utilizes and updates Bar Codes in Omni refills and EMR system, refills/stocks crash carts, and delivers medication to patient care areas. These services are provided to support the care of neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric customers.

Responsibilities
Distributive and Clinical Assistance
- Understands and follows standard dilution and preparation procedures for all drugs for all age groups. Uses IV Room Reference Books, Micromedex, and Pediatric dilutions for Antibiotics and Dilutions as defined in NeoFax Reference for ICN drug preparation.
- Prepares Large Volume solutions with additives, IVPB's, syringes, and irrigation solutions using good sterile technique and using equipment in accordance with all regulations and training.
- Completes twice annual sterile technique testing and monitors results.
- Utilizes TPN compounder to manufacture TPN solutions safely and accurately always using good sterile technique (follows procedures for setup, monitoring accuracy, replacing fluid supplies using bar code scanning technology, and arranges finished product for Pharmacist check).
- Assures all necessary doses are ready for delivery runs to depart in a timely fashion.
- Loads or delivers 'stat' and 'now' medication orders to nursing units promptly after pharmacist check (is firmly committed to patient care).
- Understands drug expense and minimizes drug waste. Follows Drug Shortages and keeps inventory levels appropriate in the Pharmacy and in the ADCs.
- Keeps drug storage areas checked for outdates, including process of refilling Omni's using accurate expiration dates. Keeps stacks and the entire Pharmacy clean.
- Focus on Patient Safety and confidentiality when loading medications, labeling medications, and delivering medications.
- Assists with Accurate Record Keeping and Handling of Controlled Substances under Pharmacist Supervision, in CSM and the ADCs. Also complies with all DSCSA laws and regulations.
- Follows through on special projects as assigned and willing to help others promoting teamwork.
- Monitors security of department, escorts other hospital employees or authorized visitors when in department, and ensures doors close completely before walking away.
- Prepares meds and delivers to Omnicells following correct procedures.
- Restocks crash carts and completes bulk charges to replace meds.

- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification or willing to obtain within 1st year of employment.
- Registration with State of Iowa Board of Pharmacy or willing to obtain within 1st year of employment.
- Writes/reads/comprehends/speaks English.
- Multicultural sensitivity.
- Operates various equipment (TPN Compounder, Omni, Barcodes, CSM, ordering & med tracking systems).
- Ability to prepare sterile IV products including chemo.
