Job Summary

The Industrial Hygienist supports and is the contact for UCSF's industrial hygiene programs. With oversight from the Industrial Hygiene Supervisor, the incumbent is expected to independently perform a wide spectrum of industrial hygiene services to include occupational exposure monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, hazard/risk assessments, local exhaust ventilation assessments, accident investigations, respirator fit testing, and other duties as required. The Industrial Hygienist must have strong verbal and written communication skills to work with a wide range of customers.

The Industrial Hygienist will be primarily responsible for performing the following tasks in support of the UCSF Campus community:

  • Routine exposure monitoring in accordance with current industrial hygiene (IH) methods
  • Indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations
  • Routine environmental sampling of air and water
  • Injury and illness report investigation
  • Hazard exposure assessments
  • Data analysis and technical report writing
  • Support for Emergency Response Team

The Industrial Hygienist may also be involved in administering safety training, supporting the respiratory protection program, policy review, equipment maintenance, measuring IH program compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $73,100 - $115,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to bio-safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area such as Life/Physical/Natural Sciences, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field, and 1 or more years of related work experience; and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 1 year of directly related experience
  • Working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds
  • Ability/willingness to wear respiratory protection
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications


  • 1 year or more experience with performing IAQ assessments and IH monitoring
  • 1 year experience in emergency response
  • Knowledge of statistical software (i.e., SAS, R, etc.)
  • Understanding of mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of TJC regulatory compliance
  • Experience in healthcare and/or research lab environments
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Associate (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
  • REHS
