Job Description

Apex Clean Energy is seeking an experienced professional to join our leadership team as Vice President of Engineering and Pre-Construction; leading the engineering, pre-construction, and estimating teams responsible for supporting the successful builds of Apex's renewable utility-scale energy projects throughout the United States.

In this role you will provide leadership and management of our engineering, estimating, and pre-construction for all Apex projects. This includes planning, budgeting, designing and managing risk to cost, schedule, and quality. You will be responsible for receiving projects from our Development Pipeline, and carrying them into the construction phase. You will work across multiple technologies including wind, solar, and storage and have direct oversight of all technical and commercial issues on the projects from early-stage development through construction beginning (NTP).

Our ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in the development, engineering, planning and construction management of multifaceted renewable energy projects and a proven ability to lead, manage, and coach a team of multi-discipline professionals.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Engineering and Pre-Construction is responsible for overseeing the successful estimating, engineering, design and early stage coordination of our renewable energy projects. This includes:

  • Executive level management of all activities associated with the engineering, estimating and planning of our projects and the teams associated, including the activities of all third-party companies contributing to the initiative.
  • Supporting the development, commercialization, and execution of all Apex projects.
  • Coordination with multiple stakeholders on capital expenditures, contract management, construction management, engineering, project finance and compliance with offtake agreements.
  • Providing executive support to project team leads to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of projects.
  • Executive level management of all administrative, technical and commercial issues on the projects from early stage development to construction commencement.
  • Implementing standardized scopes of work and RFP processes for the EPC contractor selection process.
  • Vendor/Contractor management including qualification and relationship building and maintenance.
  • Providing decisive resolution of project constraints that result in enhanced financial margins and client satisfaction.
  • Analyzing and reporting health metrics and proposes new metrics based on trends and client feedback as a basis for improvement.
  • Supporting project leads to manage changes and risk on scope, cost, schedule, quality, and safety based on available resources and client requirements.
  • Setting and clearly communicating performance expectations while developing team members' capabilities to perform and excel.
  • Clearly assigning responsibilities, setting objectives and measuring progress against expected results. Establishes a process to monitor progress against the goal through engagement and feedback.
  • Organizing people and processes into efficient workflows to achieve goals of the team.
Qualifications

To succeed as our Vice President of Engineering and Pre-Construction at Apex Clean Energy, you'll need to display excellence within the following criteria:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 6 years of construction management with at least 4 years' experience with utility-scale renewable energy projects.
  • Technical knowledge of wind power and solar plants. Able to explain key plant design and planning tradeoffs to optimize for cost, performance or schedule.
  • Executive level management of contract administration including safety, sub-contract scheduling, personnel, procurement, and contract management.
  • Strong customer service orientation, both internal and external.
  • Ability to develop performance metrics and measure performance against benchmarks, increase revenues and profit, prudently minimize costs, and improve customer and employee satisfaction and delivery levels.
  • Strong leadership capability that encourages others through confidence, integrity, intellect and perseverance that inspires trust and confidence in team members and external parties.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; equally adept at one-on-one and group communications; a team and business builder who understands and creates an attractive company culture, strong partnerships, credibility and authenticity at all levels of the company.
  • Strong passion for renewable energy.

  • Up to 30% travel required.
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates willing to relocate to the Charlottesville VA area, however remote-based with minimum 1-week per month in the office will be considered for the right candidate.

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
