Job Summary

The Director of GIS Fiber Mapping is responsible for creating, analyzing, and maintaining digital mapping data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support the company's efforts in planning, designing, permitting and constructing of all fiber networks owned and operated by the company.

Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering support for fiber optic dark fiber and broadband network construction projects within ESRI, Arc GIS Pro and IQ Geo fiber mapping software.
  • Help set standards across design firms designing the fiber networks utilizing GIS software.
  • Work hand in hand with the OSP Fiber Engineering team and IQ Geo ESRI developers to manage tools needed to support the engineering and construction of the fiber network.
  • Help support and assist in the preparation of specifications, plans, estimates and reports pertaining to the construction, maintenance and operation of fiber optic routes and other capital improvement projects within ESRI and IQ Geo.
  • Managing the transition of data into Arc GIS Pro/ IQ Geo and ESRI to ensure accuracy from an asbuilt prospective.
  • Manage and maintain geospatial data related to the fiber route assets and schematics to inventory the capacities and status of existing fiber infrastructure.
  • Support the transfer of CAD and GIS software used to perform design and development of underground and overhead fiber route maps for permitting, construction, splicing, and design into Vetro fiber mapping software.
  • Work with Construction and Splice teams to produce maps of the outside plant (OSP) fiber design.
  • Work with Construction teams to ensure OSP data in all systems accurately reflect As-built state utilizing As-Built drawings and electronic data collection.
  • Ensure all related fiber infrastructure geospatial inventories are in alignment with GIS best practices.
  • Request and process data from field audits and as-built reviews to maintain accurate data in GIS fiber management software.
  • Analyze data and reports to determine the schedule and timing of when fiber capacity might be reached and recommend maintenance or replacement.
  • Position is primarily an WFH/office environment design position but will require periodic field work.
  • Support construction team in the field with training of the construction capture tools.
  • Supporting/creating training documents.
  • Support all OSP personnel with any mapping capturing tools in the field.
  • Create detailed training docs for field personnel to use while in the field.
  • Support all GIS data issues and work with the ESRI Development team to ensure all system functionality.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience designing fiber optic cable splicing and diagrams.
  • Experience working in ARC GIS Pro.
  • Understanding of outside plant facilities such as cable sizing, cable counts, and cable records, and fiber capacity planning.
  • Ability to utilize survey reports, maps, drawings, aerial photography and other geographic data for analysis in designing fiber networks.
  • Understanding of outside plant construction techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience handling multiple priorities, organizing work to meet changing priorities, and working efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Proven customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills; sense of urgency; attention to detail; ability to handle situations diplomatically and across various levels of the organization.
  • Strong interactive communication and negotiation skills and an aptitude for problem-solving.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite, ESRI, ARC GIS Pro, IQ Geo.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Relevant certification such as Certified Outside Plant Fiber Optic Specialist, BICSI OSP Designer Certification, or Outside Plant Design Certification.
  • Experience using ESRI, IQ Geo and ARC GIS Pro suite of products including vector data creation and management.
  • Experience using ESRI Project Management software is a plus.
