Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Software Developer. This is a hybrid opportunity based in our Evanston, IL OR Durham, NC office.

The Software Developer will support technology enabled services and initiatives to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Software Developer will define specifications for new software applications and modifications to existing systems. As a key contributor on cross-functional project teams, the Software Developer will leverage application and technical knowledge of software and system functions to inform technology solutions implementation, process improvement and user experience optimization.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Software Developer you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Provide functional and operational support of technology software and systems. Drive continuous improvement of technology solutions and identify opportunities to meet evolving stakeholder needs and ULSE strategic objectives.

  • Participate as a contributing member of project teams to define software specifications and design for new and existing applications. Develop, test, and maintain moderately complex software programs that align with the functional needs of the organization.

  • Serve as a recognized resource for system and application support, enabling the development, implementation and optimization of technology solutions. Support deployment and configuration of new systems, applications and updates.

  • Analyze and monitor the performance of hardware and software technology solutions. Participate in testing and quality assurance assessments, conduct regular audits and use data driven insights to offer recommendations on capabilities and optimize functionality.

  • Contribute to testing efforts, participate in code reviews and provide troubleshooting support to resolve difficult or systematic problems. Apply end-to-end solutions and implement proactive strategies to address issues that require detailed information gathering and analysis.

  • Support and facilitate internal and external meetings. Prepare meeting agendas, presentations, and other deliverables. Communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely to stakeholders at all levels, including technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, identify needs and leverage technology solutions to support operational efficiency, streamline processes and improve user experiences.

  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices to continually improve performance and effectiveness of technology solutions.

  • Independently execute tasks that range in complexity and scope.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Positive and collaborative interpersonal skills, with proven capability in fostering collaboration and partnership across teams to develop solutions with broad impact.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related discipline.

  • Minimum 3 years related work experience, in a full-stack or backend-focused role.

  • Experience with Agile or Scrum development methodologies.

  • Proficiency in ReactJS and strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JAVAScript (ES6+), with familiarity in front end build tools such as Webpack or Vite.

  • Experience in Python and frameworks including Django, Flask, and FastAPI. Solid understanding of RESTful API design and asynchronous programming with FastAPI.

  • Proficiency in SQL Server, including schema design, stored procedures, query optimization and database security.

  • Experience managing MongoDB including replication sharding and aggregation pipelines.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure including App Services.

  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipeline and automation tools to streamline code deployment and integration processes.
