POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Summer Day Camp Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: St. Charles/Tri-City Corps

REPORTS TO: Youth Program Coordinator

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE: TFT

PAY GRADE: 201

PAY RANGE: $15.00 - $18.53

OUTCOMES

Coordinate a full range of programs for Day Camp participants, ages 5-12, that meet the physical, spiritual, and social needs in the Tri-City area. Must be willing to support all goals of The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps and its mission statement. Must feel comfortable in sharing the Christian faith, and in leading and participating in Christian education and evangelistic outreach programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. Will use the Youth Developmental Assets to track outcomes and develop program goals.
  2. Coordinate and conduct a variety of assigned activities for the Summer Day Camp program related to recreational and character-building programs for youth, ages 5-12, including (but not limited to):

    1. Follow lesson plans.
    2. Present Devotions/Bible Classes.
    3. Arts & Crafts.
    4. Assist in Computer Lab and Monitor Internet Usage.
    5. Small and Large Motor Activities, both on-and off-site.
    6. Field Trip supervision.
    7. Monitor youth while at the pool and swimming.


  3. Inform participants and visitors of rules concerning dress, conduct or equipment and enforce the rules.

    1. Work with supervisors regarding unruly or unauthorized persons as necessary.
    2. Settle disputes between participants/visitors.


  4. Maintain a number of records and reports.

    1. Records on attendance and participation.
    2. Incident and Accident Reports.


  5. Maintain the Community Center, office area, storage area, computer lab and game area. Ensure the safety and security of participants, supplies and equipment.

    1. Maintenance, as needed, for program changes to include room set up and break down, as well as cleaning when janitorial staff is not available.
    2. Help assist in all areas to get ready for the Summer Day Camp Program. (Paperwork, cleaning of rooms, planning activities, etc.)


  6. Develop a relationship with Day Camp participants and their families.

    1. Share the gospel and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ whenever appropriate.
    2. Lead devotionals and Bible Study.
    3. Open activities with prayer.
    4. Lead in prayer prior to snacks and meals.


  7. Other duties as assigned.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Under general supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator with minimal freedom to plan, schedule, and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

Works with Day Camp participants and their families, outside groups, community residents, Corps families, staff, community service workers and volunteers. In these contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE



  • High School Diploma required.
  • Previous experience working with youth preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 and up (21 and older must clear MVR & be willing to transport children in a 12-passenger van)

  • Must enjoy and be good at dealing with people (especially youth) and able to handle difficult people and situations.
  • Provide hands-on daily instruction of Bible lessons for Summer Day Campers/Vacation Bible School participants.


POSITION LIMITATIONS



  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Youth Program Coordinator informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • This position is required to do significant physical work and must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to be active for lengthy periods of time.
  • The work environment for this position includes indoor and outdoor environments with sometimes loud noise levels.
  • The employee is frequently required to walk, stoop, kneel or crouch as well as walk long distances and be able to move around physically with children.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
