The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Plumber/HVAC Mechanic to support the construction team in the assembly, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and replacement of plumbing hardware, fixtures, and piping under the direction of a master plumber for facilities on our campus.

As a Plumber I at APL, you will:

  • Work under the supervision of a Maryland State licensed professional to assemble, install, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing hardware, fixtures, and piping in general facilities, following applicable plumbing codes
  • Assist in the fabrication and installation of ductwork and HVAC equipment
  • Independently operate power tools and test equipment (e.g., pipe threaders, drills, pipe cleaning devices, inspection cameras)
  • Analyze data from test equipment to identify and resolve issues
  • Collaborate with supervisors, peers, and customers to recommend plumbing materials and equipment, provide installation guidance, and troubleshoot existing systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of building and campus plumbing systems, including applicable plumbing and mechanical codes, as well as OSHA regulations
  • Coordinate work with customers to minimize disruptions and ensure timely service
  • Interpret work orders using the Maximo system and refer to drawings and manuals to make corrections with minimal supervision
  • Create as-built documentation as needed
  • Work as a multi-skilled technician and demonstrate Level I skills in at least one additional trade
  • Plan, lay-out, and test materials and systems to ensure proper performance
  • Adjust systems and equipment as needed to ensure compliant and efficient operation

Special Working Conditions:

  • Maintain a regular schedule from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with flexibility for extended hours or occasional weekend work during peak periods or customer-focused outages
  • May require operating APL vehicles and industrial equipment
  • Use of personal protective equipment and working outdoors in inclement weather may be required
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding, roofs, and in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • May be required to assist other trades

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications if you:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience in math and language skills
  • At least 2 years of verifiable experience as an apprentice plumber or in a related on-the-job training program
  • Working knowledge of plumbing trade tools and equipment (e.g., saws, pipe threaders, wrenches), and ability to identify types and grades of pipe
  • Ability to read and understand equipment operation and maintenance manuals
  • Have a valid driver's license and can pass a Motor Vehicle Record check
  • Are able to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond if you:

  • Have familiarity with personal computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, and maintenance management software
  • Possession of one or more of the following:
    • State of Maryland Plumber's License
    • Backflow Certification
    • Maryland HVAC License

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
