Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Genetic Counseling Assistant - Cancer Center.
The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) serves as an assistant to the cancer genetic counselor(s) for the High Risk Cancer Genetics Program at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. The Genetic Counseling Assistant is responsible for the collection of patient information prior to the appointment, data entry of intake information, coordination of patient care and facilitation of genetic testing and results disclosure. The Genetic Counseling Assistant helps build a relationship with patients and the High Risk Cancer Genetics Program. The genetic counseling assistant will also facilitate workflow of clinic patients and research projects as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
- GCA will review patient entered data in the clinical database.
- GCA will also elicit a three-generation family cancer history from the patient, asking specific questions, including cancer type, age of diagnosis, genetic testing status, and other findings suspicious of a genetic condition. Inputs this data into Progeny and constructs pedigree based on this information.
- Conducts patient risk assessment using clinical data (in EMR and Progeny) to calculate cancer risks using validated risk models (i.e. Gail model, Tyrer-Cuzik, Claus, etc). These models calculate lifetime cancer risks for patients based on personal and family history data.
- Assists the genetic counselor with the genetic testing process for patients, including providing informed consent, input of lab orders into Progeny or other lab portal, prepare specimens for transportation and tracking order and results.
- Will assist the genetic counselor in performing variant curation for genetic test results using models/databases like ClinVar, SIFT, Polyphen, EXACT, Mutation Taster, etc. These databases and models help determine pathogenicity of variants and are useful for variant interpretation.
- In collaboration with genetic counselor and proper training, the GCA (with proper training) may review negative results with patients and provide appropriate documentation in EPIC for patient's EMR.
- Manage genetic counselor calendar to assist genetic counselor with consults
- Facilitate genetic counseling/testing workflows to improve access to services for patients
- Facilitate Progeny workflow for clinic patients, including sending questionnaires and tracking patients who complete the questionnaires, reviewing their clinical data in the database to determine if they are eligible for genetic counseling and coordinate in-person, telephone or webex group counseling appointments.
- Facilitate ongoing research protocols which includes but not limited to: packing study kits, screening for patient eligibility, maintaining study databases, inventory management, and sample transportation
- Performs other duties as assigned
OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPANDED ROLES :
- Assist genetic counselors in preparing and organizing materials for genetics lectures/seminars and community outreach events
- May assist with data collection for research studies, and gathering statistics for the program. Performs literature searches for publications that are relevant to patient conditions.
- Participates in the High-Risk Cancer Genetics case conference and case review, which entails performing literature reviews on rare genetic findings or syndromes. Presenting complex cases for input from genetic counselors, geneticists, and high-risk med-onc team.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of educational and clinical experience Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills. Basic math and computer skills, knowledge of medical terminology
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in genetics or biological sciences Experience in medical facility, currently in or Familiarity with medical terminology, reviewing medical records, test requisitions, pathology reports Experience in genetics related field Research experience/basic science Experience with Microsoft Office products required (Access, Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook) Experience with utilization of electronic health records Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in order to enhance the patient experience Must also possess strong organization and multi-tasking skills Highly self-motivated and attentive to detail

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $41,977.18 - $58,300.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
