Department Statement
The mission of E&I is to develop an inclusive community of accomplished and effective creators, changemakers and problem solvers.
The Weiner Family Entrepreneur in Residence is a full-time, on-campus staff position that leads Thought Into Action ( TIA) programs: TIA Incubator, TIA Summer Accelerator, and TIA Entrepreneur Showcase. The focus of TIA is facilitating the creation and advancement of real ventures (for-profit, not-for-profit, and other social and community ventures) by student entrepreneurs and changemakers, and driving the development of students' entrepreneurial skills. TIA programs are fueled by volunteer alumni mentors who commit their time, experience, and expertise to helping students realize their visions for ventures, innovations, and change.
The Entrepreneur in Residence is responsible for the TIA Incubator and Summer Accelerator, including: recruiting and engaging students to participate in TIA programs; recruiting, training, and engaging alumni mentors to provide advice and expertise for student entrepreneurs; evolving, developing, and leading program content for student entrepreneurs at all stages; providing advice and direction to entrepreneurial teams (and their mentors), particularly as they encounter obstacles or thorny challenges; and identifying and implementing improvements to these programs that enhance the experiences of student and mentor participants and drive additional positive outcomes.
Another significant dimension of the position is to develop and program the annual spring showcase for entrepreneurship at Colgate. Established in 2012, the TIA Entrepreneur Showcase serves as the culminating event for the TIA Incubator and a showcase of entrepreneurship on campus. Taking place during Arts, Creativity, and Innovation Weekend and coinciding with the Alumni Council's spring meeting, the event features exceptional ventures from the TIA Incubator and inspirational speakers from the alumni community and beyond. For students in the TIA Incubator, this event provides a clear goalpost for their experience in the Incubator, with specific deliverables and deadlines. The EIR will be responsible - with the support of others in the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Office of University Events, and colleagues in the Division of Advancement - for putting together an annual event that features newsworthy students and speakers; draws alumni, parents, and outsiders to campus; and provides a reputational boost to the University.
The Entrepreneur in Residence serves not only as a resource to student, faculty, staff, and community entrepreneurs, but also as the leader for the Colgate alumni, parents, and friends who have successfully built and grown early-stage ventures across a wide range of industries and who volunteer their time and talent in mentoring Colgate entrepreneurs.
The Entrepreneur in Residence is a student-centric team member who has a high impact on students participating in TIA programs. Success in the role will be measured by the overall satisfaction, enthusiasm, and loyalty of students participating in TIA programs and the quality of the annual pitch competition and venture showcase. The position reports to the Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation is a small, high-output, collaborative team that consists of a director, assistant director, entrepreneur in residence, and administrative department coordinator.
