General Overview The Executive Director provides leadership and direction for The Holley Institute - Carls Center for Communication Excellence and Carls Family Village. They are also responsible for long-range planning for these facilities and the integration of these plans with those of Henry Ford St. John Hospital. In addition, this person is responsible for the provision of quality and cost-effective services and systems; demonstrates and integrates the values of Henry Ford St. John Hospital in the performance of duties. Typical Duties and Responsibilities: Leadership & Governance * Meet and report to the Vice President monthly. * Oversee development of the Institute and coordination of the organization. * Broaden and strengthen relationships with key constituents and partnerships to include all Henry Ford Health System * Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic plans and organizational policies * Ensure organizational activities align with the mission, vision, and values * Provide regular reports and updates to the Board on organizational performance * Represent the organization at community events, conferences, and with key stakeholders Fundraising & Development * Assist, support and encourage all funds development plans and processes. * Attend all meetings of committees for events. * Participate in all planning of major events * Attend all community events as needed * Meet bimonthly with Development Officer to develop grant proposals - giving information regarding programs, physical and financial needs. * Set up meetings with benefactors and others who support the Institute to encourage long lasting relationships with them. * Seek new donors throughout the community. * Lead fundraising efforts including grants, individual donations, corporate partnerships, and events * Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors and funding organizations * Develop and implement fundraising strategies to ensure sustainable funding * Oversee grant applications and reporting * Increase and expand fundraising efforts to include local and national opportunities. * Plan and execute smaller events (rotating community presence) and sponsorship acquisition * Meet with Programs Coordinator to discuss new summer program brochures, review descriptions of programs, photos and design. * Proof all publications. * Assist Programs Coordinator in deciding materials to go into newsletter (articles from professionals, reports to the community, etc). Financial Management * Attend and contribute administrative reports. * Review and sign all check requests. * On a monthly basis, review budgets and make financial decisions as to where funds are needed and request transfers of these monies. * Develop and manage annual operating budgets. * Oversee financial operations and ensure fiscal responsibility. * Establish financial controls and procedures. * Work with the Board of Directors on long-term financial planning. * Collect check requests from Directors. Sign and send to Finance Manager. * Distribute checks to staff. * Sign all check requests for Holley Institute and Family Village programs. * Review financial reports on rentals, deposits and expenses each month. Program Development and Management * Begin communication with families and individuals regarding participation in the following years programs. * Contact Gallaudet Learning Center to secure presenters for Summer Programs * Visit Deaf patients when advised by Operator Services that a Deaf or hard of hearing patient is in hospital * Continue to pursue with audiologists an in-service program for nursing stations, * Emergency Department personnel, and all other staff * Stay in contact with Volunteers who screen newborns and recruit new volunteers for Infant Screening Program * Programs Enhance community education - provide year-round educational opportunities on various topics in varied communities which could be schools, libraries, etc. * Ensure Community Health and Literacy Program Director is supported * Attend Winter weekend reunion of Parents of Deaf children at Family Village. * Review program registrations to see if anything is missing and to get acquainted with those participating * Build relationships and meet with families attending the programming Staff Management * Supervise Programs Coordinator and Community Health and Literacy Program Director * Evaluate staff at the Carls Center for Excellence and the Carls Family Village. * Visit school districts and individual programs for the Deaf to recruit participants for Village programs. * Begin recruiting Directors and Counselors for summer programs in early * September for the following year. * Oversee and evaluate summer staff of 20 - 25 employees * Oversee Village staff of 10-20 employees * Evaluate the staff once a year; interviews, hires and dismisses as needed. * Meet with staff every three months to assign duties. * Work with Programs Coordinator to begin accepting registrations (February). * See that responses and deposits are made. * Review applications for Counselors and meet with each counselor. Operations Management and Summer Family Programs Management * Oversee maintenance of all three buildings and grounds. * Market the facility and seek out new rental groups. * Reviews the evaluations of all groups who rent the facility. * Check buildings continually for needed maintenance. * Contract contractors and meet with them when there is a problem to solve. * Meet Directors of rental groups (eg. U of M, St. John Jesuit, Catholic Center, etc) to explain policies and procedures to be followed when renting Village space. * Check with maintenance regarding snow removal and in-house equipment for winter. * Make sure all inspections are done at appropriate times (water inspections and test fire equipment, insect repellents and inspections, health department regarding kitchen and kitchen help. * Sign all contracts for services needed, such as Ground maintenance (water systems) * Work with Facility Coordinator to prepare for Summer Programs. * Order all equipment to be brought out of storage, boats, beachfront equipment, etc. * Meet with staff to prepare grounds. * Determine what help is needed for summer and hire employees as needed * Hire chef/cook for summer. * Review menus and set schedules for meals. * Assist in shopping needs for Directors (assure that theme night materials are on hand). * Check waterfront daily to oversee boating and beachfront activities. * Lock all buildings by 11 pm (many times done by Directors). * Unlock three buildings by 6 am. * Attend beginning services at 7:00 am * Attend Volunteer week for at least three days as support and gratitude for their work. * Set up meeting in early Fall with Village staff to winterize buildings, put all things back into storage, order boats to be picked up. Community Relations and Advocacy * Attend local conventions, conferences and meetings to market programs, (setting up booth for distribution of Institute materials). * Advertise Institute programs in other appropriate media. * Promote Alliance3 (The Holley Institute/Michigan Ear Institute/Lakeshore ENT) through webpage building, brochures, decals and continuing communication of the three entities. * Partner with hearing health organizations (including companies that sell head phones, ear pieces, etc.). * Increase presence in the community via event participation. * Attend at least one National Convention annually. * Advocate for the Deaf as calls come into office. * Advocate for policies and initiatives that benefit the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community * Increase public awareness of Deaf culture, accessibility issues, and the Holley * Institute and Holley Family Village's mission * Sit in on presentations to understand content. * Meet with parents to assess their needs * Send thank you letters to all volunteers, families and counselors as needed. Hybrid Work Schedule Requirements * Spend two to three days at the Village each week and three to four days in hospital office during the winter months. * Spend four days at Village in summer and one day in hospital office Qualifications Required * Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn * Understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community * 5+ years of leadership experience in nonprofit management or related field * Demonstrated success in fundraising and resource development * Strong financial management and budgeting skills * Excellent communication skills * Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or related field Preferred * Master's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or related field * Experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities * Knowledge of disability rights legislation and advocacy * Experience with grant writing and management * Background in program development and evaluation * Prior experience reporting to a Board of Directors Personal Attributes * Passionate advocate for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community * Cultural sensitivity and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion * Strategic thinker with ability to translate vision into action * Collaborative leader who builds consensus among diverse stakeholders * Problem-solver with strong decision-making abilities * Adaptable and resilient in facing challenges Additional Information
