Job Summary:



The Department of Ophthalmology has an opening for a 1.0 FTE entry-level IT professional. The Junior Data Scientist will be working in the exciting and dynamic fields of deep learning and medical imaging. The main focus will be to develop novel deep learning algorithms to analyze medical imaging data (e.g., ophthalmology, radiology and pathology) and answer clinically impactful questions. The role will work with clinicians and end-users at the Division of Artificial Medical Intelligence within the Department of Ophthalmology of University of Colorado School of Medicine, to develop solutions to cutting-edge clinical questions. The candidate will also have the opportunity to pursue theoretical projects on novel datasets and collaborate with world-class clinicians at the University of Colorado and external collaborators. Data Scientists are expected to 'own' a project and make meaningful progress, leading to 2+ journal/conference publications per year.

Key Responsibilities:



  • The Junior Data Scientist works with department leadership and clinicians to develop and deploy machine learning algorithms and data analytics to improve patient care and efficiencies.
  • Building machine learning models to analyze medical images.
  • Maintain project code in Github.
  • Work with clinicians to understand clinical workflows and algorithm requirements.
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and members of the research group in the area of machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.
  • Use frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow to develop state of the art machine learning pipelines.
  • Perform statistical analysis in languages including R and Python



Work Location:



Hybrid - This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:



  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, biomedical engineering, imaging or related discipline such as mathematics, engineering or physics., or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.




Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in computer science, data science, biomedical engineering, imaging or related discipline such as mathematics, engineering or physics
  • Experience in working in a research lab environment as an intern (specifically on ML/DL).
  • Experience in working with medical images such as fundoscopy images, OCT's, MRI's, digital histopathology are desired.
  • Experience in using containerization software such as Docker.


Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:



  • Understand of deep learning packages such as PyTorch & TensorFlow.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $73,909 - $94,012.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
