Job Title: Linux and SQL Systems Administrator
Location: Birmingham, AL
The Linux and SQL Servers System Administrator manages, maintains, and supports both Linux-based systems and SQL Server databases. They ensure the stability, security, and performance of these critical infrastructure components, handling tasks like server configuration, software updates, security patching, and troubleshooting. This role will perform installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux servers, SQL database servers and related systems; monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to enhance system stability; support user access and permissions management, and implement security measures ensuring data security and compliance. As a Systems Administrator, this role will be responsible for managing and maintaining AWS cloud resources to ensure seamless operations, security, and cost-efficiency. All procedures, configurations, and system architectures should be documented for internal knowledge sharing and auditing purposes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
* Linux System Administration
* Installation and Configuration: Setting up and configuring Linux servers, including operating systems, software, and services.
* Server Management: Managing user accounts, permissions, and security settings.
* System Monitoring: Monitoring system performance, security, and availability, analyzing logs to proactively address issues.
* Backup and Recovery: Implementing and maintaining backup and recovery procedures to ensure data protection and business continuity.
* Software Updates and Patching: Applying patches, upgrades, and security updates to keep systems up to date and secure.
* Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, and networking issues.
* Configuration Management: Maintaining documentation of system setups, procedures, and processes.
* SQL Server Database Administration:
* Database Management: Administering SQL Server databases, including creating, modifying, and deleting database objects.
* Installation and Configuration: Installing and configuring components to ensure database access, consistency, and integrity.
* Monitoring and Performance Tuning: Monitoring utilization of data, database applications, and server performance. Optimizing database performance for speed, efficiency, and scalability.
* Backup and Recovery: Implementing and maintaining backup and recovery procedures for SQL Server databases.
* Security: Configuring and maintaining database security measures, including user access controls and data encryption.
* Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving database-related issues.
* SQL Scripting: Writing and executing SQL scripts for data manipulation and database management
* AWS Cloud Infrastructure Administration:
* AWS Infrastructure Management: Configuring and maintaining AWS services, EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, etc.
* Monitor & Troubleshoot: Monitoring resource usage, performance and security metrics; troubleshoot and mange resolution of incidents and service disruptions
* Backup & Disaster Recovery: Implementing and managing backup strategies using AWS services (e.g., S3, Glacier, EBS Snapshots); Designing and testing disaster recovery plans for critical applications hosted on AWS
* Security & Compliance: Implementing IAM roles, policies, and best practices to ensure secure access management; auditing and ensuring compliance with internal security policies and external regulatory requirements; Managing data encryption, key management, and secure access to AWS resources.
Requirements / Skills and Qualifications
* Strong Linux System Administration Skills: Proficiency in installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux systems, including experience with various Linux distributions (e.g., Red Hat, Ubuntu).
* SQL Server Database Administration Skills: Expertise in managing SQL Server databases, including experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and SQL scripting.
* Networking Knowledge: Understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, and firewalls.
* Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve complex system and database issues.
* Scripting Skills: Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or PowerShell for automation and system management.
* Strong Communication and Collaboration Skills: Ability to work effectively with other IT professionals and stakeholders.
* Security Awareness: Understanding of security best practices and the importance of protecting sensitive data.
* Experience with AWS Services: Proficiency with EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudFormation, Lambd, Cloud Watch, etc.
* Experience in virtualization technology (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V)
* Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
* Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or relevant field.
