Overview
The lead data steward will have broad knowledge of the organization's key business processes and how those processes are influenced by data and analytics. Although the lead steward role is generally not a technical resource, the person filling it will have enough knowledge of the IT landscape to communicate well with more technical roles. Ideally, that person will have a high degree of credibility in the organization and will be effective in communicating with and influencing the people around them.
Responsibilities
As the link between the governance board (Steering and Operating Committee) and the stewards, the lead data steward will:
- Collaborate with data governance Operating Committee to receive and understand policy directives.
- Assist data stewards in interpreting policy requirements.
- Mentor data stewards in the range of stewardship activities.
- Assist in consolidated reporting into the data governance operating committee, individually (per their direct responsibility) but also as a team (e.g., a data stewards' group) when the need for steward's spans data domains and business functions.
- Execute the same tasks as regular data stewards, for the area they hold the stewardship role.
- Participate in governance steering committee meetings.
- Work with Operating Committee to develop and drive the Data Governance capability roadmap.
- Act as a link to the IT team and provide direction with regards to priority.
Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of P&C Insurance industry and key business processes
- Understanding of how data is used within business processes and its impact on desired business process outcomes.
- Awareness of the security, privacy, ethics and quality requirements for critical data entities
- Experience with data analysis techniques
- Project management skills to guide point-in-time and ongoing targeted data quality, retention, security, privacy and ethics improvement projects
- Deep and comprehensive understanding of the importance and impact of data (or bad data) on the ability of the business to meet its own objectives
- Visibility with and respect from all levels of the organization - lead data stewards must have credibility and a track record of success in the business
- Facilitation and conflict resolution skills to assist in resolving the different points of view and requirements that invariably collide during cross-team and cross-organization efforts
- Ability to communicate with people at all levels, from front line positions to the senior management team
- Ability to influence peers and subordinates to modify behaviors and provide support for the adoption of data governance policies

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
Pay Range
USD $119,000.00 - USD $163,000.00 /Yr.
