Description

The City of West Allis is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Principal Engineer to support and lead critical public works projects that directly impact the quality of life for our residents. Under the general direction of the Assistant City Engineer and/or City Engineer, you will perform a wide range of professional civil engineering duties involving design, planning, inspection, project management, traffic and lighting systems, surveying, and infrastructure improvements. In this leadership role, you'll work on complex municipal projects, including streets, sewers, water mains, drainage, bridges, and public facilities. You'll help develop preliminary designs, cost estimates, and funding applications while overseeing implementation, field inspection, and ensuring project compliance with technical specifications and local policy. What You'll Do:

  • Lead design and inspection of public infrastructure projects including roadways, utilities, and public facilities.
  • Manage and supervise project implementation, budgets, and field personnel.
  • Utilize CAD and GIS software, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Acrobat for engineering plans and reporting.
  • Conduct field surveys and apply engineering principles to real-world challenges.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and external agencies to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Prepare funding proposals and calculate/implement special assessments.
  • Support infrastructure improvements for streets, alleys, sewers, water mains, bridges, buildings, and parks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 15 to 20 years of progressive experience in engineering design, field inspection, and project management, preferably within a local municipal government setting
  • Proven experience with surveying and application of engineering principles in the field
  • Proficient in the use of CAD and GIS software to meet departmental needs
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including:
    • Outlook (email, calendar, tasks)
    • Word (templates, forms, mail merge, reviewing)
    • Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
