Scope of Position:

The Volunteer Services Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing volunteer programs at multiple Salvation Army sites. This includes recruitment, training, retention, and coordination of volunteers to support various programs and initiatives. The Coordinator works closely with staff to identify volunteer needs and ensure effective community engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:



  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations while maintaining professionalism and respect.
  • Experience in recruitment, training, and management of volunteers.
  • Ability to develop and implement volunteer management strategies.
  • Knowledge of marketing and outreach for volunteer recruitment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate physical and digital records.
  • Capability to work independently and collaborate with teams.
  • Must pass a criminal history check. Convictions do not automatically preclude employment but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with staff to assess volunteer needs and establish effective programs.
  • Recruit volunteers using creative marketing strategies, including social media, community events, and outreach partnerships.
  • Manage volunteer assignments across Salvation Army programs, including transitional housing, thrift store, donation warehouse, food pantry, development and HVIP.
  • Develop and implement a Volunteer Management Plan to enhance recruitment, satisfaction, and communication.
  • Maintain complete and accurate volunteer records, including physical and digital documentation.
  • Strengthen relationships between volunteers, staff, and participants to foster engagement.
  • Monitor and evaluate volunteer programs, providing feedback for improvements.
  • Oversee corporate Volunteerism & Engagement- including Bell Ringing, independent drives, group projects and more.
  • Create standardized operating procedures for volunteer coordination, referencing national guidelines.
  • Develop impact reports with visual charts and data to assess volunteer contributions.
  • Ensure compliance with all Salvation Army policies and volunteer guidelines.
  • Managing volunteer retention efforts including Volunteer of the Week, Volunteer Appreciations, and other retention efforts as designed or assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:



  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring hand-eye coordination and keyboarding skills.


Working Conditions:



  • Office environment with occasional visits to other program sites.
  • Regular interaction with volunteers, staff, and program participants.
  • Adaptability is required to handle shifting priorities and diverse work settings.
  • Community engagement including presentations to groups, attendance at community events, and advertisement and recruitment for HVIP.


Education and Work Experience:



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year of experience working with vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Prior experience in volunteer coordination, nonprofit management, or community outreach preferred.
