Job Summary

The Pathology Manager provides daily operational management support for the Pathology laboratories at all sites. The incumbent will manage and supervise technical performance of specimen processing and laboratory testing, efficient operation of equipment, personnel productivity, and also provide administrative and financial oversight. In addition, the employee must adhere to the University and Department of Pathology policies and guidelines.

he final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $283,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training and at least 5 years laboratory experience in a health care setting or a combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a supervisor in a health care setting
  • Relevant clinical and technical management experience
  • Laboratory management and financial experience
  • Credentials which document training and qualification in specialized areas relevant to this position (i.e. credentialed as a pathologists' assistant; histotechnologist; cytotechnologist; six-sigma black-belt, etc.)
  • Evidence of continued improvement in relevant skills and knowledge through continuing education

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in business or related degree
  • 3 years' experience as a manager in a health care setting
  • Experienced in academic institutions setting

License/Certification

In one of the following areas:
ASCP Certification or taken within 6 months of hire date:
  • Histolotechnologist (HTL, ASCP) or Histotechnician (HT, ASCP)
  • Cytotechnologist (CT, ASCP) or (SCT, ASCP) and State license
  • Certified as a Pathologists' Assistant from AAPA, ASCP or approved by California State Department of Health
    • A Graduate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited pathologists' assistant training program and a current Fellow of the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA). Fellowship and National Certification of Pathologists' Assistants must be maintained as long as one works at this position.
  • Registered Nurse - Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California (RN)
