Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The
UNC Y has been a hub for social justice at
UNC-Chapel Hill for over 160 years. Since its establishment in 1860, the Y has grown into UNC's largest and most vibrant student organization, with more than 2,000 student volunteers each year engaged in pluralistic and diverse initiatives that champion civil and human rights not just in North Carolina but around the world. The Campus Y is uniquely positioned as a hybrid unit on campus. The Campus Y serves as both an administrative unit to three high impact initiatives including Bonner Leaders Program; the Global Gap Year Fellowship; and the
CUBE Social Innovation Initiative and as an organization of 30 plus student run, social justice committees that focus on social and environmental justice issues in the areas of community inclusion, education and youth development, public health, global issues, and advocacy. As a hybrid organization, the Campus Y administrative unit and the student run committees work collaboratively under a shared mission, vision, and core set of values. The three departmental programs, along with the 32 Campus Y committees all have a common thread that centers on social justice. |
Position Summary |
The Global Civic Engagement Coordinator (
GCEC) reports to the Assistant Director for Civic Engagement of the
UNC Y and is primarily responsible for managing the Global Gap Year Fellowship programs. The
GCEC also serves as the Director of the Global Gap Year Fellowship and an advisor to the Campus Y Global Committees.
Global Gap Year Fellowship/Bridge Year Fellowship:
Manage all marketing, recruitment, selection, elements of the program; provide orientation, in-service counseling and re-entry programming for Fellows; provide ongoing advising and counseling (curricular, co-curricular, and career) for 80+ returned fellows at
UNC. Manage the programmatic resources and budget.
Global Civic Engagement at Campus Y:
Advise Campus Y global committees and student-led projects.
Partnerships:
Represent
UNC Y on committees and working groups seeking to progress global education at
UNC and beyond.
General
UNC Y:
Contribute to the overall management of the Campus Y building and
UNC Y department. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Must be able to work with diverse stakeholders, including undergraduate students, faculty and staff, community organizations, and alumni.
* Must have excellent written and verbal skills.
* Must possess effective problem-solving skills.
* Previous experience working with student groups and organizations.
* Ability to compile, assimilate and organize both printed and electronic information.
* Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
* Candidate must have a willingness to work some nights and weekends. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Knowledge of gap year programs and/or global education at the university level.
* Experience working in a higher education institution.
* Global education program management experience.
* Extensive experience living, working or volunteering abroad. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
