Introduction

The Commissioner of the Revenue is one of Loudoun's five elected constitutional officers. Our mission is to serve citizens and the business community by administering tax programs mandated by the Code of Virginia and local ordinance in a manner that is efficient, fair, equitable, and thorough, while protecting the confidential personal and business information entrusted to the office.


Job Summary

The Loudoun County Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking an analytical, research-oriented, and organized individual to join the Office's Compliance Division as a Tax Compliance Officer.

The position requires the use of discovery methods including, but not limited to, visits to commercial centers and construction sites in the County to ensure that all businesses are on the County's tax rolls. The successful candidate will utilize excellent customer service skills while interacting with business owners, or their representatives, to obtain information, counsel on proper filing procedures, and ensure that business owners understand local tax obligations. In addition to field visits, the position also requires the use of excellent investigative and analytical skills to utilize data obtained from a variety of sources to discover unregistered businesses. The individual will research, interpret and apply Virginia tax code, case law, and local ordinances to ensure that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably, and uniformly. Position requires interaction with office management and the Treasurer's Office as collections, bankruptcy, tax appeal issues dictate.

In addition to field visits, the Compliance Officer must use excellent investigative and analytical skills to utilize data obtained from a variety of sources to discover unregistered businesses. Through research, interpretation of Virginia tax code, case law, and local ordinances the Compliance Officer ensures that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably, and uniformly. The Compliance Officer regularly interacts with office management, the Treasurer's Office, and the County Attorney's Office as collections, bankruptcy, tax appeal, and litigation issues dictate.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one year of experience in Business, Management, Finance, or related field.

Knowledge of business structures, state and federal taxes, business procedures, and accounting functions is highly desirable. Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills to interact with business owners and their accountants and attorneys. Must be self-motivated, flexible, and able to multitask. Will attend business taxation classes to remain familiar with current assessment issues and laws. Position requires extensive work with computer systems to research and prepare for field work requirements. The successful candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and basic computer skills.

Spanish language skills are preferred but not required.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidate will undergo criminal background, credit and DMV record checks.

Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types. Familiarity with business operations in Loudoun County or local tax compliance experience is preferred.
