Adjunct Instructor/Adjunct Assistant Professor FY26 - UMD Department of American Indian Studies

The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) seeks to add to its pool of temporary instructors and/or assistant professors to teach in the undergraduate and/or graduate programs on a part-time basis for the 2025-2026 academic year. Term contract(s) only. Appointments may include online classes, hybrid courses with periodic weekend synchronous classes, and/or traditional face-to-face classes. Note: Being a member of the pool does not ensure a contract will be offered; course offerings, and therefore teaching appointments, vary with demand and available funding.

Courses will be filled on an as needed basis. Possible courses include, but are not limited, to:

• MTAG 5230: Advanced Tribal Administration and Governance I (3 credits)

Required Qualifications:

• Masters degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant field for undergraduate course; Doctorate degree or All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a related field OR comparable terminal degree (i.e. JD) OR Master's degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of seven years professional experience in working with American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian tribal governments and/or communities for a graduate course
• Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or comparable professional experience in a relevant field
• Proficiency, or the willingness to become proficient, in utilizing instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS).
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Preferred Preparation and Experience:

• Ph.D. or related terminal degree in hand
• Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in teaching, including use of instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS)
• Experience working with diverse populations
• Knowledge and experience working with American Indian nations
• Established record of scholarship (i.e., publications)

American Indian Studies is an academic department continuing a robust five-decade legacy in which active scholars serve to educate students, colleagues, and the public about tribal sovereignty, indigenous cultures, and the historical and contemporary experiences of Native peoples and nations. The department has five programs: two majors (American Indian Studies and Tribal Administration and Governance), a minor (American Indian Studies) a Master of Tribal Administration and Governance and a Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship and four graduate certificates. Pay Range:
Adjunct Instructor/Instructor: $46,225.13 - $61,634.00 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
Adjunct Assistant Professor: $59,433.50 - $79,126.00 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
