Job Purpose

The Materials Test Operations Specialist is responsible for coordinating resources in the Materials Lab at the Automotive Development Center and supporting the team in daily activities. The role requires close collaboration with a diverse group of material engineers, technicians, and management to facilitate the research anddevelopment of materials used in Honda vehicles. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and clean work environment and ensuring equipment operations to enable on-time testing. The Test Operations Specialist works with Department Leadership in establishing an annual fixed asset strategy.

Key Accountabilities

Teamwork



  • Assist team of engineers and technicians across the organization to facilitate experiments and projects, providing technical support and guidance. Expected to support new PIC development through training, coaching, and mentoring.


Technical Specialist



  • Supports a team of engineers and technicians across the organization to facilitate experiments and projects
  • Directs the proper use of the equipment considering the capabilities, limits and safe use of the equipment.
  • Ensures standard operating procedures for all lab equipment.
  • Proposes new processes to address safety, productivity, and sustainability of labresources.
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment, processes, capabilities, and productivity.


Safety Compliance



  • Ensures safety for the materials labs and works with Department Leadership on the PDCA of test processes and procedures
  • Implements and enforces safety and cleaning protocols to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Utilizes company established databases to manage safety data sheets and other safety-related documentation
  • Conducts annual safety audits led by ADC Safety / HDMA Regional Safety.



Key Accountabilities Continued

Resource Coordination



  • Oversees the procurement, storage, and inventory of lab materials, chemicals, and supplies
  • Creates yearly budget plan to support lab operations and ensure on time spending to achieve organizational targets
  • Works with Facilities Department Management to address and remediate issues within the lab or with test equipment when they arise.


Capital Equipment Specialist



  • Supports Department Leadership in the creation of capital investment plans.
  • Ensures appropriate utilization of fixed assets.
  • Supports equipment Department Leadership in health risk evaluations and makes recommendations based on experience. Serves as liaison between Honda and Equipment Supplier.
  • Works with Facilities to ensures timely installation of new equipment and laboratory remodels.


Cross-Functional Leadership



  • Takes on specials assignments to support ADC or business unit needs.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline (e.g. Materials Science/Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical Engineering; Chemical Engineering) or closely related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience of in a research and development test lab environment. 11+ years of relevant experience in a research and development test lab environment with no engineering degree.
  • Proficient with materials testing techniques and equipment (strength, impact resistance, environmental testing, etc.)
  • Ability to coordinate projects, including scheduling and resource management
  • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to propose and implement appropriate countermeasures
  • Ability to operate through uncertainty/ambiguity
  • Customer oriented approach to problem solving

Working Conditions

  • Physical Requirements: Sitting 80%, Standing 5%, Walking 15%, Lift/Carry 50 lb 1%, Travel up to 10%/
  • Role is based on-site within close proximity to the Materials Test Lab
  • Occasional travel may be required to benchmark other labs, qualify other test labs, factory support, and
    support new equipment evaluations and commissioning.
  • Overtime expected based on project demands/responsibilitie
  • Maintains professional conduct and follows all departmental, safety department, and company policies,
    procedures andrules
