Description

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct professor for co-teaching (with Prof. A. Khair) our cross-listed courses 06663 (Analysis and Modeling of Transport Phenomena) and 06707 (Advanced Transport Phenomena) during the fall 2025 semester. These courses are part of the core graduate coursework in the department: specifically, 06663 is a core course for our Master's programs and 06707 is a core course for our Ph.D. program.

Course Description: 06-663 Analysis and Modeling of Transport Phenomena

Students will learn the basic differential equations and boundary conditions governing momentum, heat, and mass transfer. Students will learn how to think about these equations in dimensionless terms and will apply them to model physical and chemical processes. The primary mode for solving them will be numerical. Analytical results for classical problems of high symmetry also will be presented to serve as a basis for comparison and validation. Software: A finite element and computational transport tool.

Course Description: 06-707 Advanced Transport Phenomena

An introduction to foundational concepts in mass, momentum, and energy transport. The governing equations for such transport phenomena in flowing fluids will be derived and then analyzed in a variety of scenarios, including unidirectional flows, lubrication theory, Stokes flow, and forced convection heat and mass transfer. The focus will be on problem formulation and solution using applied mathematical techniques. Throughout, the importance of developing a physical intuition for transport phenomena will be emphasized.

Along with the qualifications below, the final candidate will be available to teach in person on Mondays and Wednesdays during the Fall 2025 semester.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in teaching graduate students in engineering
  • Experience in computational methods for fluid dynamics and transport phenomena

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • Work experience related to multiphysics transport processes

Requirements for Work Authorization

  • Applicants for this position must be in Pittsburgh for the fall semester and legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
