Who we are looking for:

Cornerstone Home Lending is seeking an experienced mortgage counsel member to join or legal team. This individual will serve as general counsel and a valued advisor and legal resource for management and team members for Cornerstone Home Lending, the mortgage banking division of Cornerstone Capital Bank. Collaborate regularly regarding the company's business strategies and goals. Identify, manage, and minimize the company's exposure to liability. Assist in the development, management, and monitoring of programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. Work under limited supervision and report to Chief Legal Officer of the Bank.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Regulatory Compliance Support - Maintain a working knowledge of mortgage related consumer and regulatory agency laws, rules, and regulations in a multi-state residential mortgage lending environment and be able to provide advice about mortgage industry trends and best practices. Provide advice and counsel to the company's compliance staff on regulatory matters.
  • Litigation Management - Manage claims, litigation, settlements, subpoenas, title matters and similar issues, including managing outside counsel and maintaining a comprehensive claims and litigation report.
  • Loan Origination Operations Support - Communicate effectively with senior managers in all areas relating to the life cycle of residential mortgage loans, including evaluating legal risks, assisting in the resolution of complaints, drafting and reviewing contracts, and other loan level support. Be knowledgeable and experienced with loan officer compensation laws and advise team members about those laws.
  • Vendor Management Support - Reduce business/financial risk by assisting managers in the drafting, negotiation, and execution of various contracts, addendums and related agreements.
  • Facilities Support - Reduce business/financial risk by assisting managers in the drafting, negotiation, and execution of leases, subleases, and related agreements.
  • Advertising and Marketing Support - Reduce business/financial risk by assisting compliance with reviewing various advertising and marketing programs.
  • Technology Support - provide legal support for technology contracts and technology services.
  • Affiliated Business Arrangements - provide general advise and support for the company's joint ventures with home builders and Realtors.
  • Human Resources Support- serve as counsel to the Human Resource team.
  • Special Projects as assigned.



What you'll need to be successful:




  • Bachelor's degree
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree
  • 7+ years of experience in a legal environment supporting mortgage lending and/or compliance functions
  • Proficient working knowledge of computerized applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation software, email and specialized business applications software
  • Strong knowledge of legal and compliance issues related to areas of responsibility
  • Excellent business and legal judgment, including ability to place legal risk in the proper business context
  • Ability to read and interpret complex laws, regulations, court decisions, reports, and documents and synthesize complex information quickly to provide business risk evaluation and recommendations for key decisions
  • Ability to formulate innovative solutions to mitigate legal risk in a manner that supports business objectives and priorities
  • Ability to work independently and effectively represent the Legal Department as part of a multi-functional team
  • High degree of professionalism with the ability to cultivate and maintain a positive working environment with all levels of management, coworkers, counterparties and regulators
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills including maintaining internal reports
