Summary: The Manager of Security develops, establishes, administers and implements security policies, protocols and procedures designed to preserve the safety and security of guests, employees, and the Garden's collections, buildings and grounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Provides leadership, training and supervision of Security staff; promotes a culture of teamwork and mutual support; monitors staff productivity, workload and morale with the goal of promoting employee satisfaction while accomplishing the Gardens mission.
  • Manages and coaches Security Supervisors to ensure consistency of all protocols on all shifts.
  • Oversees staff scheduling, including shift coverage, overtime and vacation backfill; Coordinates hiring of contract staff as needed to maintain adequate coverage and within budget constraints. Responsible for departmental budget, including creation, monitoring and adjustments as needed, in consultation with VP of Visitor Operations.
  • Ensures all reports (wand tours, security incident reports, weekly reports to VP, accident, injury and near miss accidents) are all reviewed and handled immediately. Adapts and/or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.
  • Collaborates and supports the Safety Senior Manager in safety related inspections and trainings including ALICE Training, etc.; also provides insights to any safety concerns.
  • Serves as a member of the Safety Committee.
  • Monitors weather conditions and provides recommendations to Senior Leadership in their decision making due to severe weather.
  • Coordinates Security initiatives for all Garden events, including lead role in traffic and crowd control planning, inclement weather procedures, contract staffing needs, first aid strategies. Attends event planning meetings to provide guidance and ensure Security protocols are implemented.
  • Conducts investigations of crimes and other security related incidents involving the Garden and its clients which may include staff, volunteers, contractors, visitors and other members of the public.
  • Keeps all certifications (CPR, AED, first aid, etc.) current, in order to act as a First Responder to medical emergencies as needed.
  • Liaisons with local law enforcement and first responders in neighborhood.
  • Manages and oversees access control system for all Garden grounds and buildings; Creates access badges for all staff, volunteers, and contractors. Recommends any improvements and changes.
  • Manages the Gardens CCTV infrastructure, making recommendations and upgrades. Manages these projects with budget allocation.
  • Leads security measures for satellite sites, i.e.: Butterfly House and Shaw Nature Reserve.
  • Coordinates activities with Facilities and Construction personnel on issues concerning greenhouses, Ecosturxure system, lighting, temperature controls, helping to resolve when maintenance is not on-site.
  • Meets expected attendance guidelines.
  • Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of inclusion, teamwork, cooperation and respect within division and throughout the Garden with all employees, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and others.
  • Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Supervisory Responsibilities: This position supervises Security Supervisors, Officers, and contract Security Officers.

Qualifications and Experience:



  • Five to seven (5-7) years' experience in Security.
  • Minimum 2 years' supervisory experience, with the ability to effectively lead and direct teams in managing multiple projects; Provide quality results within a fast-paced mission-based public attraction with a strong focus on execution.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Scheduling flexibility that allows for working days, nights, weekends and holidays and as an on-call manager.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with internal team members and external organizations for the purposes of creating a commitment to common goals, prioritizing, minimizing obstacles, and executing realistic priorities in a professional environment.


  • Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills; attention to details


  • The Garden is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our employees, volunteers and guests. All staff are strongly encouraged to receive all vaccinations as recommended by your healthcare provider prior to hire date. The Garden reserves the right to require future proof of current vaccination status, based on local health department guidelines. When international travel is necessary for Garden business, staff must be able to obtain required travel clearances, driving permits, and vaccinations for all countries where travel is required.

Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field strongly preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered.



Communication and Language Skills:



  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral/written).



Mathematical Skills:



  • Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; able to calculate percentages and use decimals.



Reasoning Ability:



  • Requires the ability to exercise independent and reasonable problem resolution with a wide range of possible internal/external issues related to public programming with schools.


  • Ability to exercise independent and reasonable problem resolution with a wide range of visitors' requests.



Computer Skills:



  • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).


  • Proficiency in navigating through the Internet, and various PC applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access and Outlook) required.
  • Experience in database management.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and use EBMS event scheduling software effectively.
  • Ability to supervise and direct others to input of data.
  • Ability to analyze and trouble-shoot problems in software and work with IT personnel to reach a solution.
  • Strong technical ability.
  • CCTV Control Integration, ability to review and provide data to management/police.
  • Access control experience



Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:



  • Must have a valid St. Louis Metropolitan, Missouri Security License
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid chauffer's license (Missouri or Illinois) with the first two (2) months of employment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record (prior to employment)
  • Ability to obtain the certifications within two (2) months of hire date and renew annually (unless otherwise stated in certification):

    • American Red Cross CPR
    • First Aid
    • De-escalation/Verbal Judo
    • Garden's AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)
    • ALICE Certified Instructor (active shooter training)





Physical Demands:



  • Ability to lift up to 20 - 50 lbs.
  • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing); principally operates standard office equipment to include computers, copiers, files, fax machines.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods throughout work day (may sit up to 50% of work day).
  • May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., climb step stools, etc.).
  • Ability to walk up to 90 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to wear Garden-issued PPE to complete tasks as needed.



Work Environment:



  • Fast-paced, high traffic, and team-oriented indoor office setting, shared work space, office environment with multiple staff within department area. Needs to operate standard office equipment to include computer, copier, fax machines and other equipment as instructed.
  • Comfortable working around insects and plants.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., humid conditions, temperatures over 100 degrees, as well as below 0, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
  • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering general questions regarding animals, horticulture, MBG operations, events, facilities, etc.
  • Must be able to conduct outdoor patrols on foot, in carts or bicycles.
  • Ability to drive/ride in Garden motor vehicle transporting employees to other campus buildings/parking lots as needed for up to eight (8) hours daily for several weeks.



Work Interactions:



  • Direct supervision of shift supervisors.
  • Interaction with all Garden departments/personnel, including Garden management, staff, volunteers, board members, donors, visitors, vendors, local officials (local fire, police, ambulance/EMT personnel), area neighborhood associations and the general public.
