Responsibilities

PE Teacher

The PE teacher carries out the professional duties as circumstances may require and in accordance with Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services and the school's policies under the direction of the principal; demonstrates curriculum knowledge, provides instructional services to students, assesses achievement effectively, and takes responsibility for professional development. The Physical Educator provides instructional services to Residential Treatment Center and Group Home patients including students with disabilities. Provides consultative services to public/private schools and facilitates the coordination of academic requirements and assignments for children and adolescents as requested. The special education teachers help students with disabilities access general education curriculum. The special education teacher works with students who have learning, mental, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special education teachers may adapt general education lessons, teach basic skills, or design individual education plans (IEPs). They also implement these plans by providing individualized instruction and monitoring student progress and all other duties required by IDEA.

Hill Crest Behavioral Health is an acute care, 194 bed inpatient psychiatric facility located in Birmingham, AL, providing mental health services for adolescents and adults.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and current Alabama Teaching Certificate Required

1-3 years Physical Education/ Special Education Training and experience

Master's Degree and SPED Certification preferred.

CPR Certification

Ability to establish rapport with interdisciplinary team and assist patient to work toward recovery and to sustain health.

Maintains and submits accurate and timely records as required by law and educational guidelines.

Experience on an in-patient psychiatric unit or residential program

Must complete and maintain training in CPR and Handle With Care: aggression management, crisis intervention, and restraint training.

Demonstrate knowledge of normal growth and development of the population served.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities % Of Time

1. Creates and manages a caring, supportive, purposeful, and stimulating environment which is conducive to student's learning. 5

2. Identifies clear physical activity and wellness habit objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenges and high expectations. 15

3. Provides individual instructional services using a variety of methodologies for children and adolescents, appropriate to gender, age, and developmental level. Develops and maintains daily, written plans based on curriculum, core/state standards and IEP goals 15

4. Prepares ongoing, weekly lesson plans of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for assigned students. 15

5. Ensures appropriate grade level, curriculum, and subject matter is taught on an individualized basis, develop individualized education plans for students with disabilities in-state and out-of-state, and maintain special education files, records, documents as mandated by IDEA. 20

6. Maintains a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping, and reporting of children's progress. 10

7. Provides academic/behavioral data for treatment team meetings and attend meetings if required. 5

8. Participates in ongoing physical education activities in a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports all students and their individual needs 5

9. Consistently demonstrates competence in day-to-day scheduling of duties by completing tasks on time with little assistance from others as required. 5

10. Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position. 5
