Prosthetic Technician I

HJF is seeking a Prosthetic Technician I to assist the clinician with all activities of fabrication, servicing, and repair related to limb fittings. This is the lower level of two levels within the Prosthetic Technician position.

This position will be in support of the Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence, Military Performance Laboratory (MPL), Department of Rehabilitation Medicine located at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI)/Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The aim of the CFI is to provide state-of-the-art care for wounded service members as they return to the highest levels of physical, psychological and emotional function. The MPL provides injured military members with the best technology available to precisely analyze and interpret movement dysfunctions. Personnel from the MPL provide clinical gait analysis services, conduct research to improve patient management, and provide education and training in leading-edge care and rehabilitation. This is a full-time position in direct support of research and development projects involving assessment and training of individuals who have experienced limb trauma.

  • Fabricates prototype components and tooling.
  • Knowledge of turning and milling type machine shop services.
  • Prepares molds for modification by certified prosthetist.
  • Fabricates diagnostic test sockets using various thermoplastics with drape and blister forming techniques.
  • Follows detailed, multi-step instructions for assembly of complicated prosthetic and orthotic systems.
  • Tests all mechanical and myoelectric components prior to fitting.
  • Fabricates definitive prosthetic and orthotic devices.
  • Maintains and repairs prosthetic and orthotic devices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to include, but not limited to, upper and lower limb orthotic fabrication, lower limb prosthetic fabrication.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering required.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Working experience in the fabrication of prosthetic and orthotic prototype technologies.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with limited supervision and other technical team members.
  • An ability to learn new systems quickly, troubleshoot fabrication related issues, and provide a high attention to detail.
  • Works comfortably with and independently fabricates definitive prosthetic or orthotic systems to clinician specifications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Operating motor vehicles, machinery, and/or power tools.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a prosthetic/orthotic fabrication environment setting.


Compensation



  • The hourly pay range for this position is $24.09-$36.06. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
