Metal Fabricator Intern

NASA Ames and Astrion is looking for skilled Metal Fabricator experienced across a range of skills that ensure the accuracy and quality of work. Possess problem-solving, time management and communication, and technical skills, understanding of metal fabrication techniques Tasks include the cutting, bending, and assembling of metal structures from various metal and composite materials. Candidate is detail-oriented, with a solid understanding of metal fabrication techniques, and able to handle physically demanding tasks.

Education

The minimum educational requirement for a machinist is typically a high school diploma or GED. However, post-secondary education, such as apprenticeships, certificate programs, or associate degrees in precision machining, is often preferred

Certifications

Certifications from recognized bodies, such as the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), can be advantageous. High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a relevant apprenticeship or certification is a plus. Such certifications demonstrate proficiency and can enhance career advancement opportunities.

Candidate should possess:

• A solid technical understanding of blueprints, specifications, work order possesses
• Problem-solving skills, and time management ability
• Exabit good verbal communication and writing skills
• Experience operating a diverse range of fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers
• Measure, cut, and shape metal materials according to the design
• Familiarity with operation and utilization of specialized machinery and welding equipment for cutting and shaping
• Experience in setting up machines, monitoring their performance, and performing regular maintenance ensuring machines operate smoothly, and minimize downtime.
• Able to measure and test completed products to ensure they meet design specifications
• Experience in safe operational control and set up of shop machines, tooling, holders, jigs, and hand tools
• Understanding and utilization of precision measuring tools such as calipers, Micrometers, Micrometers, Edge and Center Finders, Dial Indicators.
• Knowledge of metals and their properties
