Cerner ED/FirstNet Specialist

Position Description

The ideal candidate will serve as a subject matter expert capable of bridging the gap between vendor technology and clinical operations. They must possess a strong understanding of the product's functionality and troubleshooting techniques, enabling them to validate system performance and identify issues. This includes evaluating current workflows, recognizing opportunities for optimization, and recommending improvements in either system design or operational processes. The candidate should have firsthand industry experience in FirstNet and demonstrate deep familiarity with the application of electronic health records in that setting. They must work to resolve issues and change requests. They must be able to confidently lead discussions with diverse stakeholders, assess current-state workflows, and propose enhancements that consider both immediate needs and downstream impacts. Additionally, they should be adept at articulating changes to affected groups, integrating those insights into training content and communication strategies to support long-term success across future rollouts.

Type of Employment: Full-time salaried and fully benefited position

Work Location/Travel: Expected 50% travel required; applicants must be free from travel restrictions to accommodate evolving needs of the client.

Salary Range: $95,654 - $129,187 base salary, depending on experience and location. Competitive salary/pay, potential for bonuses. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is highly competitive but dependent upon employment type (1099, contract, W2).

Role Reports to: Hiring Manager

Direct Reports: This role has no direct reports

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Cerner FirstNet, supporting clinical documentation, triage, patient tracking, and ED throughput workflows

  • Collaborate with ED physicians, nurses, and clinical informaticists to tailor system configurations that reflect real-world emergency medicine practices

  • Provide at-the-elbow support (ATE) during go-lives, upgrades, or optimization phases

  • Train ED staff on FirstNet usage, including dynamic documentation, care team coordination, CPOE, alerts, and documentation templates

  • Participate in system testing, validation, and user acceptance training (UAT) to ensure readiness and performance of ED workflows

  • Monitor issue tickets related to FirstNet and escalate unresolved problems appropriately (ServiceNow or equivalent)

  • Assist in designing and maintaining ED-specific MPages, PowerForms, and tracking boards

  • Contribute to project planning, future-state workflow mapping, and optimization strategy

  • Act as a liaison between the clinical ED team and IT build/configuration team during Cerner upgrades or change management events

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Strong knowledge of emergency department workflows and documentation standards

  • Deep understanding of Cerner FirstNet modules, tracking boards, and real-time decision support tools

  • Familiarity with VA-specific care protocols, VHA policies, and federal EHR adoption standards

  • Excellent communication, user training, and documentation development skills

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, responding quickly to clinical and technical needs

  • Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to independently resolve technical issues.

  • Polished interpersonal skills and proven success in customer-facing, patient-facing, or stakeholder-facing roles.

Education/Certification Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Clinical Administration, or related field

  • RN Clinical licensure

  • Preferred certification in Cerner FirstNet

Experience Required:

  • 5+ years working with Cerner FirstNet, ideally in a clinical or analyst role including supporting Cerner EHR implementations

  • Experience working with multidisciplinary emergency teams including physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff

Technical Skills Required:

  • Proficiency in Cerner FirstNet, PowerChart, PowerForms, MPages, Dynamic Documentation, CPOE, Alerts/Orders Management, ED Tracking Boards, Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)

  • Experience with Bedrock, Discern Rules, or ServiceNow ticketing preferred

  • Familiarity with HL7 messaging, clinical decision support, and patient flow metrics is a plus
