Job Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant Senior (CA Sr) is an experienced CA who assists patients and families by supporting personal hygiene and daily living needs. The CA Sr provides comfort, transportation, vital sign monitoring, and other delegated tasks. In addition, the CA Sr supports and assists nursing personnel and other providers in diagnostic procedures and technical treatments and functions as a member of the healthcare team. The CA Sr participates in unit committees and taskforces and supports process improvement work. The CA Sr is a resource to the CA and nursing team on CA scope of practice. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) is a 48-bed inpatient unit specializing in the care of patients with cancer, blood disorders, immunodeficiencies, and genetic disorders who require hospitalization for their treatment of their diseases or conditions. Treatments include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, cellular therapy, and radioactive therapy for oncologic and non-oncologic diagnoses.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attends to the individual needs of patients, which may include assistance with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, transferring, providing comfort, and communicating patient needs with other members of the healthcare team.
  • Mentors less experienced Clinical Assistants or new hires as required; may assist in training and orienting team members to department as needed. Performs and educates on various tasks as assigned, including checking vital signs, weighing patients, applying creams/ointments, applying/changing dressings and collecting specimens.
  • Responsible for higher levels of care for patients and more complex functions as needed within competencies.
  • Advocates and supports patient needs by utilizing resources and materials; transporting patients; answering patients' call lights and requests; and reporting observations of the patient to healthcare team members.
  • Proactively supports a positive patient and family experience.
  • Escalates issues to the healthcare team in a timely manner.
  • Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.
  • Stores and prepares rooms and medical equipment for patient and healthcare team member use.
  • Acts as a liaison to departmental committees and process improvement projects as assigned.
  • Proactively resolves problems within scope of role using existing department policies, procedures and protocols and makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Serves as a mentor and expert in clinical area, is a resource to the charge nurse within scope of role, and continuously assists in reviewing and assessing the skillset of peers with less experience and knowledge.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, in compliance with regulations and policies.

Schedule: Full Time (3 - 12hr shifts per week)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degrees
    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience
    • Two (2) years in health care as a Clinical Nursing Assistant or equivalent. Demonstrated experience as a clinical area resource, educator and/or informal mentor/coach to colleagues and participating in initiatives and projects that support patient care within scope of practice.
  • Equivalency
    • Proof of successful completion of health assessment and nursing foundation courses, in addition to basic medical/surgical clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program may be considered in lieu of designation as a CNA, MA and/or EMT.
  • Licenses & Certifications
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association is required
    • Designation as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is required

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $18.44 to $27.67
