Position Title: AVP of Accounting

Department: Finance

Reports to: Controller

Location: Hybrid, two days in office in NYC

Travel: 10%

Salary Range: $133K to 154K*

*New hires are typically brought into the organization between the minimum to midpoint of the salary range posted depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Accounting reports directly to the Controller and is responsible for overseeing the month-end close process, cash, and Accounts Payable. They will ensure accounting deliverables are accurate, timely and efficient. This position is also responsible for the management of the accounting staff and requires collaboration with departments supporting and utilizing financial information. The ideal candidate will have a background in non-profit or government accounting and have an understanding of revenue expectations from grants and donor-restricted funds.

Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Provide strategic financial advice to senior management.
  • Ensure that GL transactions are recorded in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
  • Lead monthly close process and ensure that the monthly close calendar is adhered to and that all close and compliance procedures are met.
  • Assist with preparation and review of monthly, quarterly and annual financial and compliance reporting.
  • Support annual audits; manage/supervise the general accounting staff in providing external auditor requests.
  • Perform balance sheet and income statement analyses as assigned and requested by the Controller.
  • Provide expertise and recommendations on best practices for process and systems improvements.
  • Ensure that team policies and procedures are documented and updated timely
  • Assist the Controller with various finance-related initiatives covering special project requests, financial analysis, and accounting system maintenance.
  • Oversee daily cash monitoring of incoming receipts and outgoing disbursements for daily cash flow reports.
  • Review and approve various journal entries and month-end reconciliations prepared by team members.
  • Review and approve invoices and other expense submissions prepared by Vibrant employees.
  • Supervise staff in performance of their duties, including annual performance evaluations and regular meetings.
  • Mentor/coach and continue to train and develop staff to allow for better utilization and efficiency of team members and responsibilities.
  • Support leadership on special projects and participate in various leadership meetings.
  • Attend regular meetings, assist with management change, and contribute to team building.

  • Demonstrates exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail; able to translate complex financial and technical information into clear, concise messaging for senior leadership, auditors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented; capable of prioritizing, delegating, and executing goals efficiently to meet strict deadlines and perform well under pressure.
  • Brings strong problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented, can-do approach to work; actively identifies opportunities for process improvements and implements best practices for systems and workflow enhancements.
  • Able to work effectively within a collaborative team environment; builds positive relationships and aligns interests across evolving departments and a transforming organization, including with colleagues who may not have direct reporting lines.
  • Communicates effectively with Finance department leadership and other internal stakeholders; provides strategic financial advice and expertise in line with US GAAP and Vibrant's accounting standards.
  • Exercises discretion and professionalism in handling and securing confidential information; maintains integrity and trust in all interactions.
  • Advanced US GAAP accounting knowledge, with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply technical accounting guidance and make critical decisions on accounting treatment and processes.
  • Skilled in using enterprise resource planning systems (Workday or Sage preferred) and related financial planning tools; mastery of Microsoft Excel and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Displays a positive attitude, presence, self-confidence, and genuine concern for humanity; contributes to a collaborative, mission-driven work environment.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA is strongly is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Proven expertise in preparing, tracking, and analyzing reimbursement claims for New York City, New York State, Federal, and non-governmental funding sources.
  • Strong technical accounting skills with the ability to make critical decisions on accounting treatment and processes to ensure compliance with Vibrant accounting standards and US GAAP.
  • Extensive US GAAP accounting knowledge, with experience interpreting and implementing technical accounting guidance.
  • Experience in the non-profit or government sector highly desirable.
  • Solid understanding of indirect cost rates and cost allocation methodologies is a plus.
  • Skilled in using enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and planning tools; Workday or Sage preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; mastery of Microsoft Excel.
