The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Staff Associate I to work within the Marine and Polar Geophysics department. The Staff Associate I will support the management of oceanographic data for the US science community working with other team members under the supervision of the Senior Research Scientist. Responsibilities include the curation, documentation and delivery of shipboard underway data to national archives in support of the Rolling Deck to Repository using established workflows. Experience with GIS, scripting, programming, or database skills a strong asset. Requires skills in problem solving and to work independently. Duties and Responsibilities include:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Earth and Environmental Science or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience required. Must have basic computer skills including UNIX and scripting experience (e.g., shell, PHP, Java, Python, Matlab, R) and experience in the processing of scientific data. Experience working with databases (e.g., SQL) and marine sensor data acquisition (e.g., bathymetric sonar) is a strong asset. Should have strong problem solving, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work independently within specified guidelines and have strong task management skills. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled. Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
