Job Summary

The Department of Medicine receives an average of 1500 clinical charges each week from 14 specialties and 4 inpatient admitting services. Timely review, accurate coding and follow up is imperative to revenue flow that is consistent and reflective of the clinical work performed by providers.

Under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for reviewing physician clinical documentation and assigning the appropriate procedure and diagnosis codes as supported; must be knowledgeable and adhere to state, commercial, and federal billing regulations. Also must obtaining insurance authorization if needed and provide documentation for appeals. Excellent communication skills required to query physicians for additional information or clarification as needed.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $72,800 - $109,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine is the largest department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) with an annual budget of over $205 million. The Department is divided into 13 divisions and 3 centers. There are 148 fulltime faculty members, and 111 without-salary faculty affiliated with the Department. In addition, there are 420 staff employees, 73 MSP physician appointments, 31 non-faculty academics, 39 post- doctoral scholars, 10 clinical fellows, 67 fellow and resident FTEs, including 3.0 FTE chief residents. The Department operates more than 13 clinics, 4 inpatient medicine services with 9 teams (Resident Inpatient Service -5 teams, Faculty Inpatient Service - 3 teams, Cardiology Service -1 team and MICU Service -1 team), and 15 consultation services. The ZSFG Medicine Service has an annual volume of ~5600 hospital discharges, 52,000 clinical visits, 31,000 specialty care visits, and 18,000 eConsults. In terms of extramural funding, in 2023, ZSFG DOM principal investigators received new awards totaling $166M and earned research revenue of $135M

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training1 year of coding experience
  • 1 year of coding experience
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and concepts of the healthcare revenue cycle. Knowledge of any or all of the following: billing, collections, charge capture, contractual adjustments, third-party reimbursements, and cash management
  • Detail oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, set schedules, and complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment with internal staff in a wide variety of business and clinical areas

Preferred Qualifications


  • Working knowledge of reporting instruments, metrics and / or dashboard design
  • Proficiency in common database, spreadsheets and presentation software
  • Demonstrated communications skills, with the ability to interpret and convey complex clinical finance information in a clear, concise manner. Ability to summarize and present reports and presentations
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of workflows and systems
