As the Staff Manufacturing Engineer, you will be the technical lead in performing, planning, and organizing complex manufacturing engineering solutions for the improvement of existing and future products and processes. The candidate will contribute on multiple concurrent capital and maintenance engineering projects. The candidate will have a track record for consistently delivering agreed project plans and is responsive and realistic about time and resources to deliver. This candidate will anticipate and prevents future problems, taking charge to bring about change and taking initiative within role. The candidate will develop and evaluate solutions to problems and implements creative forward-looking solutions, that potentially will be globally adopted throughout Smith & Nephew. What will you be doing:
- Design and/or oversee manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for device assemblies, equipment installation, and material handling.
- Influence product and manufacturing design changes for improved COGs and manufacturing scalability.
- Support and/or lead engineering teams decision making around designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, or improving manufacturing, assembly, test, and packaging processes for continuous manufacturing methods and technologies for both new and current products.
- Participate and/or lead (as required) verification and validation build and provide technical data and /or report outs. Assist and/or lead product and process transfer to other manufacturing facilities and vendors.
- Design and/or coordinate sequence of operations and specify procedures for the fabrication of bespoke tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance.
- Inspect performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigate/initiate corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
- Develop and/or ensure acceptable documentation for the manufacturing process or product including but not limited to: Lab notebooks, DOEs, Routers, Work Instructions, Test methods, Drawings, Specifications, PFMEAs, Control Plans, Master Validation Plans, Measurement System, Analysis Plans, Protocols and Reports, Validation Protocols and Reports in a timely and manner.
- Identify strategic vendors and assess technical capabilities developing long term material supply chains to support Launch activities.
- Ensure compliance with quality systems, all relevant internal procedures and policies and all applicable regulations.
- Oversee and integrate complex technical projects involving multi-functional areas under established budget and schedule requirements.
- Troubleshoots for manufacturing processes assembly processes and equipment downtime issues, with the understanding of the cost impact.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or required by Operations and Engineering Leadership team.
- Analyze problems then provide and implement solutions to complex technical manufacturing problems in the manufacture of medical devices with potential causes from raw material through finished goods, to maintain consistent efficient flow of product.
- Demonstrated track record for driving innovation, process capability and delivering results that serve patient and business needs.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical projects / concepts to a lay audience. Listen to others by asking clarifying questions that gain an understanding of other points of view.
- Equally effective participating on team (as member) and on an individual basis.
- Manages well across the matrix through individuals at a various functions and levels.
- Contribute to the leadership, development, and mentorship of engineering team members.
What will you need to be successful:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering Discipline
- Master of Science in Engineering Discipline is preferred
- Minimum eight (8) years engineering experience in a product development environment, preferably in medical device industry.
- Injection Molding experience is highly desirable.
- Must have experience in QSR and EN46001/ISO-9001 regulations.
- Must have experience implementing Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma practices.
