Position Summary:
The Microbiology Associate is responsible for performing microbiological analyses in a laboratory setting to support quality control, research, or regulatory compliance. This role involves preparing samples, conducting tests, analyzing results, and ensuring all work complies with industry standards, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and applicable regulations (e.g., FDA, USDA, ISO).
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and analyze environmental, product, and raw material samples for microbial contamination. Perform tests such as total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and other indicator or pathogenic organisms. Follow established SOPs and testing protocols in accordance with ISO 17025, FDA BAM, USDA MLG, or equivalent. Accurately document all results, observations, and deviations in lab notebooks, worksheets, and LIMS. Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, pipettes, and balances. Prepare media, reagents, and dilutions following proper aseptic techniques. Monitor laboratory supplies and assist with inventory management. Participate in internal audits, proficiency testing, and quality system improvement initiatives. Assist with investigations, corrective actions, and validation studies as needed. Adhere to all safety and hygiene protocols in the laboratory.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, or a related scientific field. 0-2 years of microbiology laboratory experience (academic or industry). Experience in a GMP or ISO 17025 environment preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
Strong understanding of microbiological techniques and aseptic practices. Familiarity with LIMS, Microsoft Office Suite, and data entry. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods. Manual dexterity required for pipetting and handling lab materials. Must be able to work with biohazardous materials safely.
