THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Civil Engineer with a focus on Transportation to assist the District Geotechnical Engineer. This position offers an exciting opportunity for experienced engineers to apply their knowledge of engineering principles and practices in making critical decisions that contribute to the successful execution of projects. The role requires efficient task management within budgetary limits while effectively representing the Geotechnical Unit to meet the District's project objectives. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will apply your expertise in sound engineering to conduct in-house geotechnical designs for landslides and bridge foundations, utilizing software such as SLIDE. A key aspect of your responsibilities will involve investigating slope movements, landslides, and mine subsidence incidents. You will also provide technical leadership, addressing challenges and delivering independent engineering solutions to landslide-related issues encountered during maintenance and construction. Additionally, you will develop geotechnical parameters essential for roadway and structure design, while preparing various documentation, including reports, emails, and transmittal forms. Your role will include assisting in the preparation of various contracts for geotechnical drilling, serving as the Inspector in Charge for geotechnical laboratory testing. You will review geotechnical submissions for local projects, highway occupancy permits, right-of-way dispositions, and mine variances, as well as maintain the Core Shed inventory and compile an annual list of core boxes for disposal. Representing the Geotechnical Unit at scoping field views and meetings, you will assist in preparing concurrence forms and develop scope of work and man-hour estimates for geotechnical components of consultant-designed projects, while also reviewing and providing feedback on consultant reports and recommendations for various initiatives.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, at manager's discretion. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
  • Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an engineer-in-training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; or
  • One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver's license.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
