The Herzfeld lab in the Department of Neuroscience is seeking a highly motivated and skilled neurophysiologist to design and execute extracellular neurophysiological experiments in awake, behaving nonhuman primates. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge systems neuroscience research that advances our understanding of neural circuit function during behavior. The Scientist will work closely with the principal investigator and collaborators to develop and optimize experimental protocols, perform large-scale neural recordings, and carry out sophisticated data analyses. The Scientist will also play a key role in disseminating research findings through scientific publications, conference presentations, and grant writing.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility

The Department of Neuroscience has a longstanding tradition of excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our faculty are experts in cellular, molecular, and systems neuroscience, performing basic research extending from gene expression to system functions. Research focus areas including ion channels, signal transduction, chromatin biology, synaptic transmission and plasticity, neural development and circuit formation, degeneration and regeneration, sensory and motor processing, circuit functions, perception and sensorimotor integration, neural computation and theory, and human evolution. The department's foundation in basic sciences informs translational research addressing grand challenges in neurodevelopmental disorders and aging, diseases of excitability including epilepsy and cardiac arrhythmia, and cognitive and sensorimotor dysfunction. The Department offers a stimulating, collaborative, and inclusive environment for research, training, and education.

Compensation:

The starting salary for this position is $60,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with extracellular neurophysiological recordings in awake animals

  • Proficiency in experimental design and execution

  • Proficiency in computational analysis and coding


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with nonhuman primates

  • Experience with optogenetics in any animal model

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of scientists

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


Education:

Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related discipline required.

Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, or a similar field will be given first consideration.
