Summary
The Lactation Consultant provides clinical assessment, care, education, and support to breastfeeding mothers in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role collaborates closely with nursing and medical staff to ensure optimal care for both the breastfeeding mother and infant.
Responsibilities
Breastfeeding Assessment & Support Evaluate breastfeeding effectiveness and provide appropriate interventions and education to prevent or address feeding challenges. Support for Non-Breastfeeding Infants Assist mothers of infants unable to breastfeed in establishing and maintaining milk supply, including proper storage and handling of expressed milk. Collaborative Care Work with primary care providers and healthcare teams to implement feeding interventions tailored to the medical needs of the infant and/or mother. Education & Training Deliver breastfeeding education to patients, hospital staff, and community partners. Participate in ongoing training and outreach efforts. Post-Discharge Support Offer continued breastfeeding support after discharge through phone consultations, in-person follow-ups, and coordination with outpatient care providers.
