Job Description Summary:We are pleased to announce the opening of the Aeronautical Engineer III role. This Special Mission Aeronautical and Structural Engineering position will support the installation of highly specialized airborne research instrumentation payloads on the NSF NCAR GV and NSF NCAR C-130 aircraft.

Additionally, the Aeronautical Engineer III will conduct and may lead aeronautical and structural engineering efforts to support the installation of geophysical research instrumentation and modifications on the C-130 & GV aircraft.

Altogether, this position directly prepares and/or participates in the preparation, review, and approvals of descriptive and substantiating design data for aircraft modifications/alterations as appropriate. Position Details:

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the engineering group and at times independently, develop approaches and processes to solve complex engineering problems, determine resource requirements, and identify appropriate resource allocations related to aircraft installations and operation.

  • Work with a team to conduct design and certification efforts for load criteria, emergency landing conditions, in-flight lift, drag forces, gust loads, and similar support items.

  • Work effectively and collaboratively across disciplines of engineering, project planning, flight operations, and geophysical research, resolving as a team issues that arise pertaining to schedule and cost, and instrument/infrastructure performance.

  • Provide as-needed support for structural and systems aeronautical engineering requirements for field campaign installations.

  • Provide aerodynamic analysis, FEA/FEM, and hand calculations for research instrumentation, research rack overturning moment, skin and frame stresses, and deflection due to ultimate pressure loads.

  • Participate in the preparation and approval of certification documents, substantiating data, and instructions for continued airworthiness.

  • May lead or assist in certification efforts to obtain Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) form 8110-3 as appropriate and requested.

  • Maintain knowledge of engineering techniques appropriate for DER certification(s).

  • Assist instrument developers in the design and installation of instruments to meet airworthiness requirements.

  • Ensure that installations meet appropriate standards for airworthiness, continued airworthiness, and functional requirements, and prepare appropriate documentation for certification.

Education & Experience

Required

  • Master's Degree of Science in Mechanical, Civil, or Aeronautical/Aerospace engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience with modifications to aircraft and research instrumentation installation.

Desired

  • FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) delegation: Obtain the knowledge, skills, and ability in Structural Engineering principles to obtain an FAA Structural DER designation. FAA Designated Engineering Representative delegation: Structures or System and Equipment Mechanical.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Demonstrated Knowledge of aircraft design practices, modification, and major alterations in a broad range of aeronautical disciplines, such as aerodynamics, pneumatic systems, aircraft power systems, electrical/electronic equipment systems, loads, stress, performance, lightning protection, and ground and flight testing.

  • Demonstrated Knowledge of FAA regulations, including Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 21, 25, 43, Field approval, and Supplemental Type Certifications.

  • Demonstrated Knowledge of computer-aided engineering techniques (design, drafting, finite element analysis with hand calculations for direct validation, computer-aided design, etc.) sufficient to produce documentation needed for safety and certification guidelines.

  • Knowledge of special requirements for operations in the public aircraft category.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
