Minimum Experience/Education

  • Master's degree required
  • Prior experience in academic advising, preferably with college students
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
  • Computer literacy and competency


Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Direct experience advising at UNC Charlotte
  • Experience using EAB's CONNECT, BANNER, DegreeWorks

Duties and Responsibilities
The University Advising Center is looking for a temporary, part-time Advisor for the Fall 2025 semester. Duties include:
- Provide support to undeclared first-year and transfer students to maximize success.
- Meet with students via in-person/phone/video to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as general education requirements and exceptions, major/career exploration, major declaration/degree requirements, academic planning, course selection, registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution, add/drop and withdrawal, academic success strategies, and University and College policies.
- Facilitate students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans.
- Make referrals and connect students to on campus resources (e.g. tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions, counseling support, financial aid, etc.).
- Manage and mitigate issues that negatively impact student success and assist students in resolution of difficulties regarding degree programs, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in the advising-related portion of new and transfer student orientation sessions.
- Maintain students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit and all email and/or phone interactions.
- Utilize advising technology to schedule appointments, review transcripts/degree audits/early warnings, grades, and degree completion progress.
- Engage in all outreach campaigns to targeted student populations (which include reinstated from suspension, probation, semester warning, early alerts, and mid-term alerts), track their progress, and provide holistic proactive advising.
- Proactively reach out to all assigned students at regular intervals to ensure they are meeting expectations.
- Maintain and convey knowledge that pertains to degree requirements, declaration of a major, and University policies, such as, but not limited to probation, suspension, and Academic Forgiveness.
- Monitor and stay current on applicable laws, policies, procedures, student development theories, and advising theories.
- Work collaboratively and effectively with other advisors, staff, and faculty across the University and College, utilizing evidence-based best practices for advising to increase student and advisor success.
