Position Summary
The Staff Attorney for the Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy Clinic is responsible for representing clients in transactional and regulatory matters, creating informational materials, as well as conducting community workshops and education on topics related to transactional law. The Staff Attorney is responsible for supervising law students in the representation of clients. The Staff Attorney works in a fast-pace collaborative environment to serve clients and the community.

The Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy Law Clinic provides transactional, regulatory, and other non-litigation representation to community-based nonprofit groups, small businesses, social enterprises, and cooperatives.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Interview potential clients.
  • Conduct outreach to the community to inform stakeholders of the services of the Clinic.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director and other clinic faculty and staff to determine the types of projects and clients the Clinic should take on.
  • Collaborate with the Director and others to effectively provide community programming.
  • Manage and develop community partnerships.
  • Create informational materials.
  • Prepare and deliver community presentations on legal issues related to entrepreneurship, nonprofit law, or community development.
  • Counsel clients, draft legal documents, and negotiate agreements.
  • Engage with the local community to learn about its legal needs.
  • Handle client matters during winter and summer breaks in the academic calendar.
  • Supervise student work.
  • Teaching opportunities within in the clinic seminar.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Juris Doctor from an ABA-approved law school or its equivalent from a foreign country.
    • Active Illinois law license, or ability to be admitted by motion to the Illinois Bar.
    • Excellent time management and organization skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • A minimum of two years of practice experience.
    • Experience in transactional law, nonprofit law, community development law, economic development or community lawyering highly preferred.
    • Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish (written and oral).
