A Brief Overview The Surgical Technologist I is an integral member of the surgical team. The Technologist I works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. He/she functions in a scrub role, providing assistance to the operating surgeon and assistants. He/she also provides assistance in preparations for procedures and the clean-up afterwards. This individual works collaboratively with the entire surgical team.
What you will do
- Functions in "scrub" role during the various surgical procedures and provides assistance in all areas of patient care.
- Collaborates with RN and physicians in developing a plan of care for each patient.
- Collaborates with RN in maintaining a safe, organized, clean, and comfortable environment for patients.
- Scrubs for routine and complex procedures.
- Consistently demonstrates aseptic practice as defined in AORN Recommended Practices.
- Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, equipment, and supplies by anticipating the surgical needs at the field.
- Assists physicians and RN with monitoring and ongoing assessments throughout the surgical procedure.
- Assists with transportation of patients, as needed.
- Assists physicians and RN with emergency situations.
- Exhibits proficiency in each of the surgical specialties that he/she works.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to expertly prepare and operate standard equipment (e.g. nitrogen powered drills, balancing of microscopes, basic audio-visual equipment) prior to and during the various specialty procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill to expertly prepare, program, and operate specialized equipment (e.g. navigational systems, lasers, cusa) prior to and during various specialty procedures.
- Obtains and assembles positional devices (fracture tables, Jackson tables, cerebellar headrests).
- Practices safety precautions throughout the perioperative phase of patient care.
- Handles all "sharps" in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as Core Techs, environmental services, and CPD staff.
- Participates in "time-outs" prior to the start of surgical procedures according to hospital policy guidelines.
- Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN.
- Handles and dispenses medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes (e.g. epi: 1:1000, local anesthetics, antibiotic irrigation) to surgeon within the sterile field.
- Handles, prepares, and dispenses hemostatic agents (e.g. thrombin, tisseal, floseal) to the surgeon within the sterile field.
- Accountable for the disposal of all bio-hazard materials and "sharps."
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED - Required
- Technical Diploma Surgical Technologist - Required
Experience Qualifications
- At least one (1) year operating room experience Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks according to Unit's needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to work under pressure.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). - within 9 months - Required or
- Certified Surgical Technician (CST) - The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). - within 9 months - Required and
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required

$29.50 - $37.61 Hourly
